Soldiers are not law enforcement officers and are not trained in responding to civil disobedience. They only have a way of dealing with dissent. In the RoEs, the alternatives in responding to violence are very very limited and in some cases you’re only restricted to two: engage, or break contact (otherwise known as retreating). However, bounding back can be tactically suicidal if you’re outnumbered and outflanked leaving you with one option, engage and push through. Thank you for what you do soldiers, it’s not your fault that you’re been used for police and constabulary duties. |
