A doctor has passed away after collapsing at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Edo state.

The deceased identified as Dr. Okeoghene Egigba from Okwovwori, Amukpe in Sapele area of Delta state, died in the early hours of yesterday after slumping while on duty in the hospital. 

Until his death, Dr. Okeoghene was a Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery.

According to reports, he was undergoing training to become a full fledged surgeon before his sudden death.

It was gathered that the department of surgery was shut down yesterday to mourn the death.

A close friend Chika Ndulue took to social media to mourn the loss. She wrote; Chief Okeoghene Egigba. Dutiful, respectful, warm, jolly good fellow. Even in the world beyond, you will always have my respect. It is all souls day, may God receive your soul, may you intercede for us.

This is d problem with Surgeons, always pride themselves in how much stress & activity they subject themselves & perhaps even silently disdain Internists for their non-aggressive & non-invasive approach to healthcare seeing it as not dramatic enough.

Once told an interviewer I had 4yrs of postNYSC experience as a Medical Officer & all he was interested in was if I could do Surgeries. Had to tell him d Course is Medicine & Surgery and not Surgery & Surgery. I've seen more Surgeons having Strokes and Heart Attacks with Sudden Death than I have Internists. It's quite appalling I must say. As I small reach, I no dey take my BP play, always checking at every opportunity like someone who's got OCD.

Next time when you see doctors going on strike and some other professions in the medical field come online to rubbish their image or demand same pay.. Let stories like this come to mind. The medical profession is the
most stressful and abused profession in Nigeria. Nigeria is a dream killer for medical doctors

You most likely didn't know that the same day this doctor died (primary cause not mentioned in the write up a nurse and a Pharmacy intern passed away too in the same hospital and nobody is talking about it or spewing anything about low salary about their deaths.
Pls kindly know what to type and stop misleading people with your "fake" superiority profession stuff.

What!? Dr Egigba ke? Ahh what is this!!! I have never met him in person but he was a very good customer of mine. He bought medical books from me online. He also loved books on history. I observed he was one doctor that loved to upgrade his knowledge.

Later, he would ask me to help him buy surgical equipment that he couldn't get in Benin. He was really passionate about his profession and seemed like someone who would go all out to help his patient.

He contacted me a few weeks back that he needed forceps for a particular surgery. Though I didn't know anything about medical equipment, I was willing to help cos from the way he talked, he needed them urgently for the surgery. So I went to the dealers, connected with him on Whatsapp and showed him each of the forceps they offered. He would tell me "no" that's not what I want". We went through this together for about 3hours on a Saturday morning.

Eventually I got a full set that met his specifications and was ready to ship them. Again he said "no", one set is useless in theatre, we would need 2". I continued my search for the second set until I got them and shipped all to him.

At some point, even the dealers were fed up with his specifications and I jokingly said to him "Now I wish I was a doctor". He laughed and replied "Not too late". He seemed like a workaholic, a doctor who went all out for his patients. He must have been overworked.

After all said and done, I told him I was going to launch a personal shopper business based on the Saturday purchase experience and would need references from him. He said no problem.

Rip in peace, Dr. Egigba. Nigeria has just lost one of her finest. You are celebrated even in death. May God uphold your family and grant them the fortitude to bear this loss. You have made heaven!
