Our brief specifically stipulated Food Science and Technology.

Drawing from my experience i would like to state here that graduates from related disciplines like Micro-Biology, Biological Science, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry could also apply but would have to write a very detailed cover letter which should seek to explain the relevance of your training/certification to the advertised role.

I have seen something similar playout in the Oil and gas sector. The position advertised for was Petroleum Engineering Executive. During the shortlisting process the most favoured candidate appeared to be a Petroleum and Gas Engineering graduate from University of Lagos.

There was however one young applicant with a FUTO Chemical Engineering first degree who applied with a very passionate cover letter that made a successful go at detailing the relevance of his training to the position. It was only fair that we at least invited him to an interview. This guy was the bomb and he really defended himself. The panel was so impressed that he was the numero uno recomendee. he scaled through primarily because he was smart.

My advice would be that the Microbiology and graduates of other related disciplines should apply.
Afterall, you really don't lose anything in applying.

But please pay attention to your cover letter. It could make all the difference.
