On Sunday morning, I decided to follow Lara to the church where she worshipped. It was a parish of RCCG not far from her house. That Sunday morning reminded me of the Sunday morning Steph came to my apartment. Lara dressed in the same fashion Steph had dressed, donning a hat to match. Just like Steph, she looked adorable. We walked back to her house like a young, recently married couple.

The drugs I took the previous day and the balm Lara applied had mitigated the pains I felt, but the pains had not totally stopped. Maggie had not returned to the house when we got home. We went to the bedroom to change from the church clothes. Clad only in bra and panties, Lara came to run her hands on me.

‘Maybe we should try to see if you’re strong enough now,’ she said.

‘No harm in trying,’ I concurred.

The ‘trying’ was on for several minutes. I was amazed that my manhood was not responding.

‘Maybe you’re still very weak,’ Lara said. ‘I’ll wait until you fully recover.’

‘Thanks for your understanding, dear,’ I muttered.

I tried to overlook the issue, but deep down inside me, I was a worried man. I believed it could not just be because I was weak. Weak? In the past, even in serious illness, that ‘thing’ had never failed to get aroused. Something must be wrong somewhere.

I decided to relax in the bedroom, rather than going to the sitting room. Lara remained by my side on the bed, still holding on to my left hand like I must not step out of her sight.

I soon dozed off. She slept off too in my arm. It was my ringing phone that woke me up.

My movement awakened Lara and she rolled to the other side of the bed. I was surprised when I checked the number calling. It was the number I had stored as Steph III.

‘Hello,’ I said in eagerness and anxiety.

‘Hello, Alex.’

‘Goodness. What happened, Steph? Why had you not called me all this while? I tried to reach you, but no way. What is the problem?’

‘There’s no problem.’

‘You mean you just decided to cut me off?’

She didn’t answer.

‘Hello, Steph. Are you still there?’

‘Yes.’

‘Why’re you not saying anything? What’s wrong?’

‘Nothing is wrong.’

‘So, why are you silent? How’s Alex junior?’

‘He’s fine.’

‘Was something wrong with your lines before? I tried several times, but could not get through.’

‘Nothing was wrong.’

I was angry. That meant she had deliberately shut me out. ‘Good to hear from you again,’ I said.

‘Yeah. Bye for now.’

She cut the line. She had acted very strangely and I wondered why.

'How's she?' Lara asked.

'She said she's fine,' I answered. 'But she's acting quite strange.'

Lara put her right fingers in my mouth. That was the end of my discussing Steph with her. Minutes later, Lara got up from the bed.

'Let me get something for us to eat,' she said and left for the kitchen. Much later, we had a meal of semolina and 'efo riro.' Towards evening, I
returned some of my clothes to my apartment and brought fresh ones. I remained mostly in Lara's bedroom and she was stuck with me.

Monday morning, I woke up at my normal time and started preparing for work. I drove Lara to her place of work before going to mine. I
realized that I could still work but the pace had slowed down.

About ten p.m, I received a call from Ilorin, where my parents lived. It was from my mother.

'Good morning, mummy,' I greeted her.

'Good morning, Alex. How's everything over there?'

I answered in the affirmative and asked after my dad and others.

'They're all fine. Why didn't you inform us that your wife has moved out of your house?' she demanded.

‘Well, something happened and she parked out,’ I said.

‘That’s what she said. She said you have a baby from another woman. Alex, is that true?’

‘Yes, mummy, I …’

‘And you didn’t let your parents know. How could you do that, Alex?’

‘I’m sorry,’ I replied. ‘I was still going to tell you and daddy, but I want to resolve the issue with her first.’

‘You have not done well at all, Alex. Then, secondly, why do you move in with another woman?’

‘Is it Enny that said all these? My question for her is, how did she know I moved in with another woman?’

‘But you’re presently not staying at your home, are you?’

‘No, I’m not. When Enny left, the house became so boring, so I decided to be putting up with a friend.’

‘So, you now left your home to be sleeping with a woman friend. You that are married! I’m not happy with you, Alex. And I’m not happy that all
these are happening over there, yet you kept your dad and me in the dark.’

‘I’m sorry, mummy. I was still going to tell you everything.’

‘I could hardly believe her when she was telling me this morning. Why’re you treating your wife like that?’

‘I’ve told her I’m sorry; that it was all a mistake. I even pleaded with her parent to plead with her, but she’s implacable.’

‘What else do you expect? If you have informed us on time, we would come in and resolve the matter before it degenerates. The first thing you must do is to move out of that your woman friend’s house.’

I didn’t say anything.

‘Alex, are you hearing me?’

‘Yes, mummy.’

‘You must not sleep in that your friend’s house, henceforth. Then, I’ll be coming to Lagos by Wednesday. We’ll settle the rift between you and
your wife.’

I sighed. ‘Alright, mummy.’

‘Now, be a good man and cause your wife no more heart ache. Only God knows what has come over you. The news I’m itching to hear is that she has taken in and is expecting our baby; not that there’s quarrel and she has left the house.’

‘I understand, mummy.’

‘I’ll be calling you to inform you about the time I’ll be arriving in Lagos on Wednesday.’

‘Okay, mummy.’

‘Alright, see you.’

I breathed in deeply when the telephone conversation ended. I could not really understand the stand of Enny. On one hand, she was threatening to initiate divorce. On another hand, she called my mother to report that I had abandoned home for another woman. Oh, maybe she was only giving them reason for why she wanted the divorce.
It was not my intention to do what I did, but I believed I had been forced to do it. Now, I respect my parents a lot. I had not informed them about the rift because indeed, I thought I would be able to handle the situation without getting them involved at that stage. But, my mother was right, I should have informed them from the outset.

I had no intention of disobeying my mother. That meant I would stop sleeping in Lara’s house from today on. I sighed as I wondered how best I would have to explain the reason for Lara. I appreciated the role she had played and would not want to make her feel hurt. I decided that I would have to call her and tell her the truth about my mother’s call and her instruction. It would not be easy but I would have to do that, but not right away.

I continued my work as best as I could. When it was afternoon, I decided to call Lara.

‘Alex darling, how are you?’ she asked.

‘Fine. What about you?’

‘I can’t be better.’

‘Good to hear that. Lara, something has come up o.’

‘Hope nothing serious.’ I could sense anxiety in her tone.

‘Not exactly.’ I told her what my mother said and how she berated me for not sleeping at my home. I also mentioned that she would be coming to Lagos in a couple of days’ time to see how the dispute between Enny and I could be settled.
Lara was silent for a long time.

‘Are you now saying you’ll be moving out of my apartment?’ she finally asked.

‘I’m afraid. That’s the situation for now.’

There was no response again from her. ‘Are you still there, Lara?’

‘Yes, I am.’

‘I’m so sorry, Lara dear. But I won’t forget what you’ve done. I owe you a lot.’

‘Does that mean you’ll not be coming at all?’

‘Of course, I’ll be. But, I won’t be sleeping over there, for now.’

‘Well, it’s okay. As long as we’ll still be seeing.’

I felt happy about the way I had talked to her. At about the time she normally came around from her place of work, she was in my office. We closed together and I drove to her home.

‘Somebody must be spying on me and reporting to Enny,’ I told Lara as I drove in the busy traffic. ‘Definitely, somebody must be feeding her information about my movement. And now, she’s spreading the news to everyone.’

Lara did not say much. She sat quietly in the car. When we got to her home, she barely removed her office wear before she started her kissing.
I had the longest kiss I had ever had that day. When it was few minutes to eight in the night, I told her I should be going home.

‘I’m going to miss you,’ she muttered.

‘Don’t worry,’ I assured her. ‘We would be seeing each other.’

I packed my clothes in my bag. An idea came to my mind. ‘Listen, Lara, I have an idea, but I don’t want you to take offence.’

‘What idea?’

‘Can I have your account number? I’m not paying you for any service or anything. I just feel like giving you something.’

She appeared to muse over this. ‘Alright,’ she said. ‘I’ll text it to you.’

I smiled at her. ‘Good. I just feel like giving you something. I’ll be expecting your text, then I’ll transfer the money to your account.’

I picked up my bag. She accompanied me downstairs to my car. We waved to each other and I drove off. Lara’s text message containing her account name, bank and account number came in as soon as I stepped inside my apartment. After I had settled down, I transferred fifty thousand naira into her account. It was just a token of appreciation.

I was back home and I was home alone. I had not eaten but had no urge to eat. I lie down on my sofa. It wasn’t easy to be alone. I missed
Enny. I missed Lara too. I imagined Lara snuggling up to me if she were to be in that house.

I slept off and woke up about midnight. The pain on my back and joints had fully returned. I realized I had not taken the evening dosage. How I wished Lara would be around to apply the ointment on my back and legs again.

I went to the fridge and brought out Lucozade boost. I believed with that, I should be able to take my drugs. I hardly slept for the remaining part of the night as the pain dealt with me. When day broke, I decided, I would have to go to a bigger hospital.

In the morning, I called Mandy again that I would be going to the hospital before coming to work. At the hospital, I did scans and x-ray, once again. I also did some blood tests. I was to come back for the results.

It was few minutes to eleven when I got to the office. The strain of the pain showed in the way I walked. It also affected my work, but I tried to do the best that was possible.

About noon, Lara called. ‘Are you okay, Alex?’ she wanted to know.

‘A little bit,’ I answered.

‘Have you gone to another hospital?’

‘Yes. I did some tests and I’m to get the results tomorrow.’

‘Take care of yourself, Alex.’

‘Thank you, Lara dear.’

‘I’ll be in your office by 3.30.’

‘Okay. See you.’

She came in few minutes to four. ‘Hello, Alex.’

‘Hi, Lara.’ I was actually glad to see her.

‘Thank you for the money you sent. I appreciate it.’

‘It’s okay. It’s a pleasure.’

She sat down, studying me. ‘I’m concerned about how you’ll be feeding now. I wish we’re still together.’

‘My mum will be arriving tomorrow,’ I said.

‘She can’t permanently be around to cater for you. Except Enny comes into the house, your feeding will remain a matter of concern.’

‘Maybe I should get a house girl,’ I said.

‘House girl?’ she scoffed. ‘Don’t even try it. It’s not a house servant that you need; it’s a loving person that can really take care of you.’

‘I’ll be fine,’ I asserted.

Again after closing, I drove to her house. She quickly made a meal of ‘amala’ and ‘ewedu’ soup. She served it hot and I managed to eat
reasonably. I took my medication thereafter.

‘When you rest your food a bit, I’ll apply that ointment on your back. We didn’t remember to do it yesterday.’

I nodded. ‘Yes, I need that your touch again.’

I was sleepy when she applied the balm and ointment. I felt relieved as her hands moved over my back and body. ‘Thank you, Lara. You’re
God-sent,’ I said.

She laughed briefly. ‘We thank God.’

She lay by side and cuddled my back. I soon slept off. She slept by my side. I didn’t wake until dusk. I roused her.

‘Sleeping beauty, wake up. I’ve got to go.’

‘Hmn?’ she asked dreamily.

I stood up from the bed. ‘I’ve got to go, Lara.’

I wore my clothes. She yawned and got up too.

‘Are you okay, now?’ she asked.

‘Yes. Thank you.’

I left her room and went downstairs. She was on my heels.

‘Take care of yourself,’ she said as I drove off. I drove slowly to my abode.

The following morning, I first drove straight to the office, but by ten o’clock, I told Mandy I would be going to the hospital for the results of the tests, scan and x-ray.

‘I may not be able to come back to spend much time in the office today, as my mummy will be arriving from Ilorin and I need to meet her at
Ojota bus stop.’

‘Oh, your mummy will be coming to Lagos?’

‘Yes.’

I drove to the hospital which was just a ten-minute drive. Again, I was informed that all the results could not detect anything wrong.

‘You don’t mean it, doctor. What then is responsible for all these pains?’

‘We can recommend you to a specialist hospital, if the pain persists’

I got the results from him and left the place. I called my mother.

‘Where’re you now, mummy?’ I asked.

‘We’ve not got to Ibadan.’

‘Okay. I’ll be calling you again, but remember that when you get to Berger, Lagos, let me know.’
I drove back to the office. I calculated that mummy should get to Lagos by 1.00 p.m. I would have to drive to Ojota so that I would pick her and take her home. I remained in the office till half past noon, when I called her again. She said they would soon be arriving Berger. I rounded off what I was doing, clear my table and locked my office up.

‘I’ll be going now,’ I informed Mandy.

‘My regards to her,’ Mandy said.

I drove to Ojota and parked at the filling station where inter-state buses stopped for passengers to alight. Fifteen minutes after getting there, I
saw her getting down from an inter-state bus. I went on to meet her.

‘Welcome, mummy.’

‘Alex, my son.’

We hugged briefly. Her load was offloaded. When I lifted the sack which I suspected contained tubers of yam, I realized I had to apply more
force before I could get it to the booth of my car. I realized my constant pain had sapped my energy. We entered the car and I joined the
highway. I would have to drive to Maryland before I could make a u-turn and drive to Ketu.

‘You look lean, Alex,’ mummy said as soon as we settled in the car. ‘Are you sick?’

I sighed. ‘I’ve not been feeling very well, mummy.’ I told her about the pain and the tests I had done. When I mentioned that the results all
showed no problem, she became alarmed.

‘My God, I hope this is not a spiritual attack,’ she said. ‘And you did not even tell us!’

‘It’s still a fresh matter,’ I said. ‘It was this morning I got the results of the second tests. I’ve been given some medications and I believe they
will help.’

‘Now, tell me, Alex. What caused the conflict with your wife?’ She did not even wait until we got to the house. I trust mummy for her sense of
urgency.

So, I told her about how I met Steph and the secret thing we did. I told her the summary of what had happened and Enny’s reactions.

‘You can’t blame her for the way she reacted,’ mummy said. ‘You’ve really disappointed her. You’ve disappointed your parents too – particularly,
me.’

I got to the gate of my home, got down to open the gate and drove inside the compound.

It took another effort to take the sack to the kitchen store. I just had to do it.

‘What can I offer you, mummy?’ I asked as she settled in the sitting-room.

‘Get me cold water.’

I got it for her.

‘You really look weak,’ she commented. ‘I’ll let you daddy know. We must do something about it. By the way, who is this new lady you were
sleeping over in her place?’

I told her about Lara and how I had known her some years back during the national service year.

‘She is just a good friend,’ I concluded.

‘Good friend, or not, you shouldn’t have gone to be staying with her. Not when you’re still married to Eniola. Since when did you allow women
to take over your reasoning? The issue of Steph has not died down, you’re starting another one. Alex, ki lode? (what is it?) Why ‘re you allowing
women to make you stumble?’

‘You really look weak,’ she commented. ‘I’ll let you daddy know. We must do something about it. By the way, who is this new lady you were sleeping over in her place?’

I told her about Lara and how I had known her some years back during the national service year.

‘She is just a good friend,’ I concluded.

‘Good friend, or not, you shouldn’t have gone to be staying with her. Not when you’re still married to Eniola. Since when did you allow women to take over your reasoning? The issue of Steph has not died down, you’re starting another one. Alex, ki lode? (what is it?) Why ‘re you allowing women to make you stumble?’

‘That of Steph was unplanned for,’ I tried to explain.

‘You can’t justify it,’ she said. ‘No matter what you said. You were planning your wedding, yet you still went ahead to be sleeping with another
lady! My dear son, what you did was bad!’

I kept quiet. She was right.

‘I must see that Eniola and her parents today. Later the evening, we’ll go to their place.’

I nodded. She must be right again. Not long after, Lara called my line. I told her I had gone to receive the results of the tests and that they
were all negative.

‘That means the pains are not ordinary,’ she said.

‘Yes. That’s what my mummy too said.’

‘Has she arrived?’

‘Yes. We’re in my apartment now.’

‘My regards to her. Take care of yourself, Alex. See you.’

About six p.m, when I was sure, Enny should be back from her place of work, I took mummy to her place. They must have been expecting her,
as she had earlier told Enny she would be arriving in Lagos that day.

Mummy did much of the talking. She apologized to Enny and her parents about my misdeeds. She said she had seriously berated me and she believed such an aberration would not repeat itself. Surprisingly, Enny’s mother was not aggressive today.

‘My daughter,’ mummy said, turning to Enny. ‘You need to go back to your husband’s house. The devil is the one trying to bring this disaffection. Don’t allow that to be. No woman will take your place in your husband’s heart and home. Forgive him and let’s move on.’

My –in-laws thanked her for her humane intervention. Enny’s father promised that in no distant time, Enny would be back in my house. I thanked them for their time and understanding. My mother was very optimistic when we left the place.

‘Don’t worry, Alex. Your wife will be back. She’ll be back and you’ll be together. Don’t let any woman come between you. Alex, did you hear me? Don’t allow any American lady or any lady lawyer come between you and Eniola!’

‘Thank you, mum. I’ll follow your wise counsel.’

True to my mother’s words, when Enny closed from her place of work the following day, she came to my house. My mother was happier to see her. She hugged her like a daughter she had not seen for a very long time.’

‘Enny, you have come to stay. No weapons fashioned against you shall prosper,’ my mummy prayed. She went on to pray that all the schemes of the enemies to scatter our marriage would not work; that God would deliver me – yes, me – from the bondage of the jezebel ones.

‘Ah, I’m so happy you’re back. Now, I can return to Ilorin to give them the good news. Alex,’ she turned sharply to me. ‘This is the woman we know, recognize and accept as your wife. Any other lady parading herself is counterfeit. Take care of your wife. Take care of your w-i-f-e!’

‘Thank you, mummy. Thank you for everything you’ve done.’

I was indeed grateful to her. Mothers are indeed invaluable.

Enny hardly talked to me, although in the presence of my mother, she appeared to have over looked all I had done. Later, in the privacy of our bedroom, I decided to tease her.

‘I never knew you could be jealous like this,’ I said.

‘Just thank your stars that your mummy intervened. If not for her, I would never step into this house again.’

‘Really?’

She looked at me in the face. ‘Yes, really!’

‘I don’t believe you.’

‘Ehn, ehn. Okay.’

I had only been pretending that the pain I felt was not much. The fact was it was much and there seemed to be no permanent respite. I noticed after my medication, I would feel some relief. A couple of hours later, the pain would be back in severity. Apart from the pain, another nagging problem was the erectile dysfunction. Well, maybe with Enny, I would have erection and be able to perform again.

That night, Enny wore a very seductive evening wear. Mummy did not stay long in the sitting-room before she retired to the second bedroom where she had been staying.

‘Let me allow you two to have enough time for each other,’ she said, winking at Enny.

There was silence for some time after she had left the sitting-room.

‘I’m glad you’re back, Enny,’ I finally said.

She didn’t answer me. I moved close to her seat. I touched her hair. ‘I’m sure you did this for me,’ I said.

Still, she did not say a word.

‘Enny, I love you.’

That was the magical word. She smiled. I held her hand. ‘I really miss you my dear. Don’t leave me like that again.’

‘You made me go,’ she said.

‘And I’m sorry.’

She sighed. ‘Okay.’

I wrapped my hands around her shoulders. She held me too.

‘Anyway, we can start afresh,’ I said.

‘Okay.’

‘Is that all you can say?’

‘Is that not enough?’

I kissed her. Her lips were stiff and unyielding.

‘Now, I don’t understand your contradictions,’ I said.

‘What d’you mean?’

‘Look at what you’re putting on. It’s enough to set the mind on fire. But now, you’re not responding.’

‘Maybe you’ve not tried enough.’

I sighed. Even what I was saying might lead me nowhere. Maybe I should leave her as she was. If I thought Enny would let the matter go like
that, I was making a mistake. She moved to me and placed my right hand on her boobs.

‘Enny baby,’ I said.

She brought her lips to mine. It was a long, deep kiss.

‘Let’s go inside,’ she said.

I nodded. When I stood up, I felt the ache in my back rushing back and I winced in pain. Enny noticed the change in my countenance.

‘What was that?’

‘Ah, it’s that nagging back ache,’ I said.

‘Is it that bad?’

‘Sometimes.’

‘Sorry.’ She moved to my side and put her left hand across my waist. We moved to the bedroom.

I touched her hair again. ‘I like your hairstyle,’ I said.

She nodded and stared at me expectedly.

‘My mum has done very well by bringing you back,’ I said further.

‘Yes, she has really done well.’

We sat down on the bed. I stared at her.

‘Why’re you staring?’ she asked.

‘Don’t tell me I have no right to stare at my beautiful wife.’

She smiled. ‘Of course, you do.’

‘Good.’ So, I stared more.

‘I prefer the action to the staring,’ she stated.

‘What action?’

She smiled again. ‘I won’t ever believe you don’t know what I mean.’

‘Oh, I’m such an innocent guy. Please tell me what you mean,’ I joked.

‘Hmn hmn, I won’t tell you.’

‘Okay.’ I lay on the bed and pretended I wanted to sleep. ‘Good night, then.’

She climbed on me.

‘Ouch!’ I winced again.

She quickly got down. ‘What have you done to yourself, Alex?’
