Ohio House approves controversial ‘stand your ground’ bill
The proposal, also known as the "heartbeat bill," would ban abortions in Ohio after the first fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

Republican Gov. John Kasich vetoed a similar bill in December 2016, siding with opponents who contend it is unconstitutional.

"Making healthcare decisions for women and their families is not the role of government," House Democratic Whip Emilia Sykes (D-Akron) said in a statement.

The Ohio House Democratic Caucus called it the strictest abortion ban in the nation.

"I will always stand strong for the rights of the unborn child in the womb. This bill will give the opportunity of life for those babies with a heartbeat," Rep. Niraj Antani (R-Miamisburg) said in a statement.

The "heartbeat bill" also makes no exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

The bill will now go to the Ohio Senate.
