Pig farming in Nigeria is for food and for other human uses, either for domestic consumption or for commercial consumption.

It has become a very lucrative business in Nigeria today because of the increase in its population which is directly proportioned to human increase.

Pig happens to be awaiting demanded animal and that makes it more profitable because the demand is higher than the supply.

It has been researching that only 40% of Nigeria population consume pork meat and if it is enough for the 40%, the consumption for other beef and poultry will be reduced and it will reduce the price inflation for other beef and poultry.

Breed in Pig Farming
A farmer should choose the breed pig that he wants to rear with great care. Besides their productivity, the farmer should ensure that the breed can survive in the environment.

Pig Farming Feeding
Without quality feed in pig farming business, the pig will not grow well. Feeding carries the major expenses in pig farming. The farmer must understand what, when and how to feed the pig.

How Profitable is Pig Farming?
Pig farming in Nigeria is probably one of the lucrative farming business you can run especially when it is set up and manage properly.

A pig can give birth to 6 – 10 piglets. They are pregnant for four (4) months that means they can give birth twice a year under good management. It takes only 6 – 8 month for the pig to reach the market weight.

Cost of Starting Pig Farming in Nigeria

It is always better to start on a small scale, then expand as more experience is gained and in depending on the land vegetation, you might have to clear the bush and trees on the land.

Start ordering building materials and recruit a project manager to manage the construction. Pigpen must have a very strong foundation.

Drainage: Drainage prevents cross infection from effluent between piglets and the adult.

Waste disposal system: pig produced two (2) gallons of waste per day so a very good waste disposal system is needed.

Flooring: hard concrete is recommended as this prevents the pig from rooting and digging up the ground.

Wall: the wall should be strong to restrain the pigs and ensure protection. Smooth wall made from plastered cement block is recommended for the pig pen construction.

Door: metal doors are also preferred for durability.

Roofing: this is for the shade and protection of the pig from rain and sun.

Pig Farming Housing System
Open Pen: pigs are kept together within a limited area and the farmer is responsible for all their feeds and water need. This method is usually for weaners and growers, it allows the animal to play, wallow and exercise together. Housing is very simple and cheap to construct.

Close Pen: this is the commercial method of pig production under which economic considerations are the sole determinant of herd size. This pen is generally for breeders, sows, and boars.

Cost of Feeding in Pig Farming
Without quality feeding in pig farming business, the pigs will not grow well. Quality feeding carries 80% of pig growth.

It is very important for the farmer to understand that 80% of the farm expenses goes for feeding. A pig consumes two (2) gallons of water a day. An average pig eats 2 kilograms to 3 kilograms per day.

Pig Feed Formula
Animal need to feed on organic materials such as plants, other animals, or prepare food that contains plants or animals.

Carbohydrates: Maize, corn, sweet potatoes, banana peel, etc.

Protein: 5% of blood mean, 5% of fish mean, 10% of meat and bone meal, 10% of soya bean etc.

Vitamins

Minerals: iron, calcium etc.

Water: very clean water is very important

Pig farming in Nigeria is one of the profitable business and very wise investment but the selling of your product is very important so as for you to make a very good profit.

so many people who are starting pig farming in Nigeria are making the mistake of thinking that the market is readily there.

Before you start your pig farming, make sure you investigate and know your market, that is where you will sell your pig, the people that will buy the pigs, how they are buying it. Find out the prices they are buying it. Calculate your expenses.
