The recent overseas investment trip by the Oyo State Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, to Netherlands has started yielding results, especially in the area of processing of concentrates from mango fruits.

While making a presentation before the State Executive Council, a specialist in juice science and production, Adisa Lasisi, said the state government under the leadership of Alao-Akala has demonstrated commitment to processing of the abundant mango potential in Ogbomoso and other parts of the state.

Lasisi disclosed he was invited to the state by the governor due to his interest and commitment to actualise his economic dream for the state by ensuring that the tropical fruits of mango that rot away annually ‘’are adequately tapped and utilised for the economic growth of the state’’, adding, ‘’arrangements are being concluded for the commencement of the processing of mango fruits into juice’’.

The juice science and production specialist described Oyo State as the producer of one of the best mango fruits in the world, stressing that feasibility studies are already on for the possibility of establishing an economically viable processing unit for tropical fruits.

He disclosed that mango varieties available in the state would be exported as raw materials and as concentrates and that the fruit would also be used for the production of juices, nectar, jams and multi-fruit beverages.

Senior Applications Specialist, Juice Science and Technology with doctoral degree disclosed that the state has mango in abundance to produce 70 tons of mango fruit into mango puree per hour, maintaining that, ‘’Oyo State has the capability of breaking the monopoly of India which controls 63 per cent of the world market for mango fruits’’.

Responding, the state Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, reiterated the commitment of his administration to partner with private, local and international bodies towards harnessing the various economic potentials in the state for the benefit of the people.

The governor said his administration would collaborate with foreign investors that ‘’are committed to the socio-economic progress of the state’’, stressing that the government would provide enabling environment for would-be investors to encourage them in their activities.

He assured farmers that they would have every course to smile as they would have opportunity to produce more mangoes to improve their economic responsibilities, saying, ‘’the establishment of the mango processing industry is part of the objectives of his administration to reduce reliance on crude oil as a major source of income for the state as it will also provide job opportunities for the youths’’.
