When Nigeria’s Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Audu Ogbeh launched the National Gender Action Plan (NGAP) on Agriculture in October, the idea was to upgrade women from the realm of subsistence farming to medium scale and commercial farming.

The figures provided by the minister at the launch showed that Nigeria has 95% subsistence farmers, 50% of whom are women. Beyond this, women farmers in Nigeria have to contend with unequal access to land, insecurity, cultural practices and pseudo-religion dogmas.

“Despite the huge labour investment of women, productivity is low and they often have limited roles in decision making on the farms. Lack of ownership of land and other productive assets due to existing social norms has created a significant negative impact on the family income and the nation’s GDP at large,’’ said Nigeria Country Director, African Development Bank, Mr Ousmane Dore.

Agriculture is the cornerstone of the Nigerian economy, regarded as the largest sector which employs two-thirds of the nation’s human capital thereby providing the major source of livelihood for most citizens.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sunny Echono, said women are the focal point of agricultural production, processing, marketing and utilisation in the country.

“Women supply 70 percent of agricultural labour; 50 percent of animal husbandry related activities and 60 percent of food processing, yet they have access to only 20 percent of available agricultural resources.”

All these rubbish things about women leadership or farm ownership won't bring solution to anything. There had been corrupt women in Nigerian politics. There are many women too lazy to farm.

Issue here is money. So if a woman like Alakija wants to go into farming, Will she be advocating this? Wouldn't she buy all the lands she needs?

There are so many women with money... They should buy land. If they don't have money, they should get bank loan. My Aunt bought a huge plot of land and has a massive farm. She's doing well.... She didn't ask for equity in land ownership, she bought the land. Me I'm looking for money to buy land and start a farm. While women out there are looking for free land and equity in land ownership. Does it make sense?

Is anyone stopping women from owning a farm or a land. I’ve never heard of a place in nigeria where a woman has been denied land ownership, purchase or rent just because she’s a woman. Not especially when it comes to farming.

If women can dominate a garage of MARWA drivers (in gate-challenge route) in Ibadan, then who’s stopping them from owning a land to farm.

All these women rights activists should please go and find something better to do with their time and stop stiring up unnecessary sentiments.

Shut up. For every one corrupt woman politician there are a thousand corrupt men holding office presently.

Women are better managers.

Of the 95% subsitent farmers, 50% are women! More than the lazy men.

You are even to lazy to read the article!

So who is stopping them?? should the land be given freely to them? If they can buy up land for large commercial agriculture no one will disturb them. Agriculture has no gender discrimination. If you can do it then fine go ahead.

I think this is about the Igbo tradition that doesn't allow women to inherit their father's property because at the end it may fall into the husband's hands and technically he's a nobody that knew not how the property came to be that will become owner because he's got straffing rights.

On the other hand it may also be about their feminism crap, u know they hide under equality bullshiit, but in reality they just want the rules bent in their favour, unconsciously admitting they are weak and they want some kinda advantage so as to compete with their male counterpart

Nonsense.
This would have been applauded if this point was raised shortly after the civil war. Not so many years after we are still talking about about giving equal ownership of land to women.
Does the federal government give out free land based on gender?
Is there a law in Nigeria that places gender bias on land acquisition?
Rubbish talk.
When you should be talking about technicalities in agriculture, u Dey here Dey talk wetin no follow. Round peg in a square hole.
What happened to other problems of agriculture like
Lack of infrastructure e.g road, power.
Lack of improved varieties and breeds.
Government and political instabilities.
Lack of processing and storage facilities
Lack of fertilizers
Climatic effects control e.t.c.
