What's the point initiating luxury tax in Nigeria?

I really hope it does not pull through, this country generates a whooping amount of revenue we don't really need to rely on oil exports.

The structure of Nigeria keeps the cashflow around the pockets of a few people so even if they put a 100% tax on luxury items, na still the same people go collect the money.

It is "new money" that will bear the brunt.

Their companies also pay large amounts of money to the government as tax

If u want to increase revenue from tax, create an enabling environment for businesses to develop so that more business will come up nd therefore more companies to collect tax from .simple logical reasoning they don't have stupid people
And they should also learn to fight corruption so that the revenue generated won't go into the wrong hands

You have spoken well but that last part is not possible in Nigeria.

Recession Discourse and FDI debacle is a different plane and route. I'm not discussing that here.
And im not sounding political.

Was it Fiscal/Tax policy that caused recession? NO. Was it this administration policy that caused recession? My school of thought believe so
.

Rich people to be affected do not have problems getting Visas. They cant run away with Visas as those are temporary. Leaving Nigeria for taxes means they need RESIDENCY Permits in other countries. Having just =N=20m Cash to show Canadian embassy is not a singular criteria.
ithink7:
Same mentality that led to the recession.

Did you notice how the FDI fell sharply by 41%.

Find the news here:

Same gov claiming to have retrieved billions from whistle blower, yet borrowing.
You want to take from the rich to give the poor. That policy is well known in economic circle with it's dire consequences. Ask Zimbabwe.

If you're a businessman, you'll know how business people think.
Btw, if you have 20m naira, Canadian embassy will give you visa. I know what I'm saying.

You too could be on that side(become rich) one day and then you would see this general demonization of the rich as unhealthy. The rich actually contribute to the lives of the common man in more ways than you realize.

@ the Topic, The issue has never been about the AMT. of tax revenue the government of raises. What % of the tax revenue would be put to judicious use [that's the big question]?
If this is not questioned , what this policy would succeed in doing is to make more money available for thieves to steal.

And as for the rich, trust me they'll do just fine. For one they have the machinery to institute all sorts of tax avoidance schemes to navigate the potential liabilities.
The so called 'poor man' may bear the brunt of these initiatives.

Again the broad demonization of the rich does no one any good.

How much tax?

If they pay N50k per yatch or private jet, it is still a tax.

I feel sorry for the poor folks licking their lips out of envy.

Taxation system in Nigeria is a joke. There is a reason why she chose not to be specific.

cos of just 10million they will grant you visa is a stupid comment. That's not even up to $30k us dollars. Re: Billionaire With Private Jet/ Yacht To Pay Luxury Taxes From 2019 - Federal Govt by tiredoflife(m): 3:03am On Dec 26, 2018
Hehehehe this people are con artist
They know how to twerk the minds of the poor and uneducated

The clause here is if you own a private jet a luxury boat and all
Now the poor screams hurray
Let them feel it
The uneducated and the half educated and the most educated ones scream in deep pain of jealousy
Yes yes kill them

Now the story of taxation began like this in England
The king whenever he wants to go for war
Will ask everyone to pay some certain amount based on what u earn to the treasury
After a while the king became greedy as he saw money coming in each time there was a war

He wanted a steady flow
So he wanted to make it a law
But the poor opposed it
And screamed
Fearing a rebellion
He made a plan
Knowing that there is a cold war between the haves and the have not
He asked that the law be made that the more you earn the more you pay taxes
The poor shouted in joy
Yes the rich will pay more
The richer laughed and agreed

As it became law the rich was given a legal loop hole
And that's how the corporation was born
The rich created companies
And all they own they transferred to their company
And became poorer than the poor in earned income
While they became super rich as business owners and investors
So the poor kept paying higher taxes while the rich have their corporation paying little or no taxes

Now all I have said simply means
No rich man will own a luxury goods privately
It will be owned by a shell company he owns equity in
So while the poor aspire to feel rich
Buys these things and a taxed heavily
The rich own nothing
And the luxury goods will sit in their door mouth as means of transportation the company they created sent to them for use.

So again the government is playing to the gallery
Its a known trick to buy more fools grin

If you have no idea about luxury taxes and how it can be beneficial to the general populace, you should read up on it and stop sounding like an illiterate.

You sounded as if u know but ended up showing the world you know nothing about taxation

The govt sees a trend
They know the spending pattern of the poor
They know the wanna be rich middle class loves luxury goods
Statics are pouring in on how imported luxury goods are in high demand
So who is the law targeting
You feel the subsidy thieves
The truly rich
The dangote
Or the EMoney of today
Hehehehehe

I laugh at you
You tried to school someone but you too need schooling

The rich may have those things
But they don't own it technically
It was bought in the name of their companies
Which will go to company spending under some funny names they will create
While u the poor earn salary and its taxed before u spend
The rich earn through their companies
Spend all they like under different company spending clauses
And the balance they still are taxed so low or nothing at all if they declare losses for the year

So the law is for the poor
The rich don't own private jets or luxury goods
They only use what is owned by their companies which they allocated to themselves

So you see why I said you sounded smart but you ain't smart

Luxury taxes revenue should go to the states government housing that rich and wealthy people.

Taking Lagos state luxury taxes to redistribute to Northern states or non productive states will result in court cases with the federal government.

Churches like Winners will challenge federal government in court that the church uses the so called private jet for missionary purposes and not for luxury.

It is quite unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari is starting a race that he can not finish.

The primary aim of this obnoxious policy by the Buhari administration is to target southern wealth for redistribution to non revenue generating and non productive northern states.

Many of our northern brothers and sisters are not known to display luxury living. It is basically common with the southern part of the Country.

If the luxury taxes is implemented it will be an oppressive one sided taxes, regional taxes to force rich southerners to pay the money that will be redistributed to address northern poverty.

Poverty will definitely not end in the north as long as the northern political leadership force their northern citizen to continue to be an hanger on upon southern Nigeria wealth.

Apart from Aliko Dangote which northerner has private jet, yacht.

Another exception is Abubakar Atiku.

Untill the federal government put policies in place to get Nigeria truly restructured into a true federal state that is practicing true federalism, fiscal federalism and resource control.

I will not take anything the federal government is doing with outright seriousness.

Boko Haram guerrilla war is still draining our national treasury.

It is the Niger delta region that is paying the financial expenditure of the war.

The Buhari administration will get this luxury taxes money and waste in the Boko haram war.

I am not against luxury taxes being implemented as a policy to increase revenue.

Infact, luxury taxes is long over due. But my take here is that states should be the legitimate collector of luxury taxes. State government should collect this money from the rich and wealthy in their individual states and use it for their development.

Luxury taxes money should not go to the federal treasury.

Kano states today is collecting vat allocation from federal government but they are destroying beer parlour, beer and alcoholic drinks all in name that Islam forbid it.

Therefore, federal government should not get involve in collecting luxury taxes.

Federal government should scaled down most of its responsibilities and pass it to states in the federation.

Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, says owners of yachts and private jets will begin paying luxury items from 2019.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the minister said excise duties would be introduced in some areas while taxes would be reduced for small and medium enterprises.

“We are exploring the way to increase taxes as well as reduce taxes in some sectors. For Small and Medium Enterprises, what will happen is to reduce taxes. But there are some special taxes that we will be looking at imposing,” she said.

“For example, luxury taxes. If you have a private jet, we will be taxing you specially for that. If you have a yacht, we will be charging you for that and also in terms of excise duties, there are also some new areas where excise duties will be introduced.

“We haven’t got all the approvals but one of the major areas might be that of carbonated drinks produced in the country.”

According to Ahmed, the Whistleblower Unit has recovered over N8.5 billion and $465 million among others from the 1,051 investigations conducted from tips received.

“Based on verification outcome by the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit (PICA), we have also paid over 2,000 former workers of our defunct national carrier- Nigeria Airways Limited,” she said.

Patience Oniha, director general of the Debt Management Office; Mary Uduk, acting director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Babatunde Fowler, executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) were also present at the briefing to give an account of the activities of their agencies.

A govt that wants to improve employment does not tax indiscriminately. The more you tax corporate entities, they will keep sacking their employees or increase the price of their goods and services to accomodate the new tax. Federal govt should look inward and reduce their recurrent expenditure. They should stop hurting the poor. Ignorant ones are rejoicing over stupidity. Trump cut tax for the rich and their unemployment figure reduced drastically. This new policy will end up adding to the frustrations of the poor in our society.

Taxes should be paid for luxury cars and any house worth more than 100 million Naira.

I quoted you among others because of your moniker. You need to take a walk down history lane to understand how the tax came about.

In the beginning, the government told the masses that tax is only for the rich n everyone out of spite voted for it. The government loved the money and extended it to the poor too.

However, what truly makes a rich man is by virtue of the business he has. I have never seen a billionaire professor, for instance. In essence, the rich will find a way to include those travel cost in the expense section of their balance sheet and then, invite the tax man to remove their share. In a short, no rich man with half a brain will pay that tax.

We all hate taxes but is taxation really such a bad thing?

The effect of taxes on people is that people will have less money to spend after taxation. the effect of the naira losing value is that people will have less money (in dollar terms) to spend. in both scenarios, the result from the peoples perspective is the same.

when the government allows its currency to be devalued, it blames its masses for being unproductive. it blames international factors such as a fall in oil prices. it blames the IMF and the world bank. the government blames everybody but itself for its own failed macroeconomic policies. however, when the government taxes its citizens, the government is seen as the bad guy and if the citizens keep suffering, the government will have to pay a political price. Basically, taxes make the citizens hold their governments to account.

NIGERIA'S SITUATION
Revenues are falling, debts are dangerously high and the labour unions are requesting for a higher minimum wage. it will take an act of God for Nigeria to fund its budgets in a few years time. realistically, the government has two choices:

1. increase taxes or fire civil servants (or a combination of both)
2. further devalue the naira.

these are the same choices Buhari had in 2015 and he chose to devalue the naira, ushering in a biting recession that till this day, Nigeria is only "technically" out of.

Some Nigerians tend to think we can become a productive country overnight without massive investments in mass housing, education and healthcare. this is simply not possible anywhere in the world.

we should have invested in our people during the oil boom, but we didn't. now we must all come together to face this crisis cause we either all grow together or we die together.

IMHO, this current tax policy does not go enough. we pray the minister of finance knows what she is doing.

You can only tax private jets and Yatchs that are registered in Nigeria, how many are? Most if not all are registered abroad, so how will this work? It is better to tax houses above NGN30 Million and luxyry cars, they will return more to the treasury than the 30 or so private jets
