See, I'm currently not an APC nor PDP supporter (I was), I belong to the third force but your claim of who would vote PMB is just ridiculous....statistics has it that over 20milion Nigerian youths are unemployed and that number alone is enough to clear both pdp n apc cabals(considering d number of votes in 2015)...how I wish our youths can wake from their slumber before Feb 2019.....these old thieves have nothing to offer, we really need new hands, able men with vision in helm of this Nation's affairs. zombieTRACKER: 1 Like 1 Share |

Okonkwo in "things fall apart" committed suicide after he was frustrated by his village people acceptance of the western ways. Depression has always been real, do you have data and statistics to prove that many of our ancestors didn't commit suicide? Suicide is not a western thingy and has never been glamorized. And it's so pathetic that you're trying to compare hundreds of years ago with the present. If you don't know the effects of depression and what it has done to people it's better you don't lend a voice because this "hard man/woman" post you're making is only worsening the situation not helping it. 6 Likes |

Tecks10: Nobody is disputing that. But is suicide the way out? Hell No! The rate at which Nigerians take their own lives these days is alarming, but cannot be solely attributed to depression. Are you telling me that the people of old did not experience depression? Of course they did! The problem is really not depression. We are imbibing the white man's culture, of which suicide is part. 1 Like 1 Share |

Opinionated: This is very ignorant. So suicide is caused by TV? Only Americans and white people have suicide in their culture abi? The hardship, the stress, the depression and the ignorance in Nigeria cannot push one to suicide? And a mod pushed this nonsense to front page 3 Likes |

calddon: JeromeBlack: Attitudes towards suicide slowly began to shift during the Renaissance. John Donne's work Biathanatos, contained one of the first modern defences of suicide, bringing proof from the conduct of Biblical figures, such as Jesus, Samson and Saul, and presenting arguments on grounds of reason and nature to sanction suicide in certain circumstances. The secularization of society that began during The Enlightenment questioned traditional religious attitudes toward suicide and brought a more modern perspective to the issue. David Hume denied that suicide was a crime as it affected no one and was potentially to the advantage of the individual. In his 1777 Essays on Suicide and the Immortality of the Soul he rhetorically asked, "Why should I prolong a miserable existence, because of some frivolous advantage which the public may perhaps receive from me?" A shift in public opinion at large can also be discerned; The Times in 1786 initiated a spirited debate on the motion "Is suicide an act of courage?" By the 19th-century, the act of suicide had shifted from being viewed as caused by sin to being caused by insanity in Europe. |

naijaboiy: The thing just tire me oh. As if it's white people that taught us how to be sentient. I believe every sentient being experiences depression. Hell, even dogs experience depression, and they're not half as conscious as man. How much more our ancestors? But I'm not suprised they blame white people for inventing everything. Even invented suicide while we sat on our hands. 2 Likes |

I think Abdulkabir Olatunji is right. The western world is actually selling us an ideology which we dont really understand. for the last 500 years, we Africans have been trying to copy what we dont understand and this cultural imperialism is getting out of hand. We need to understand something before we copy it. I think western ideology is based on scientific rationalism, consumerism, materialism, atheism and sometimes nihilism and despair. These western ideologies need to be understood in an african context for us to be able to relate sucessfully with it. This copy cat mentality is affecting us. Ironically, we do not even understand what we are copying. Our teenagers see american kids commit suicide but they do not even understand the nature of Western society. Besides we need to start understanding issues as what is happiness and what can be defined as happiness. What is man's purpose in life. A man that has a purpose in life will not commit suicide because he has no job or has failed jamb 10 times. This philosophical outlook needs to be put in an African context. We Africans are yet to define things like the meaning of life, human nature, the nature of religion, culture, western culture in an african context etc. this calls for deep thinking and we Africans are not deep thinkers. We only see life on the surface. Besides we worship western culture without looking at the negative side of it. Someone like Kim Kadarshian might be encouraging rape or prostitution but we refuse to admit it because the western world sells the concept of slay queen for us (something we copy without understanding) 1 Like |

abdulaz:Funny The whole idea of missing out on weekend and midweek football, hangouts with friends and stuffs like that would snap me out of any idea to commit suicide. Too much fun in the world. Yes, it's a difficult and sometimes cruel world, but there's just so much fun in it. |

Gboy101:you lie. there is nothing new. our ancestors had even more challenging times than we do now,but they never committed suicides as we do now. despite all d horrors of slavery, our ancestors endured it; they did not take this easy but coward way. How many of us can endure that? Our ancestors competed for almost everything which were limited: food,women,freedom,fame,e.t.c., just as we do now. how many of those who lost out in such competing times committed suicides for not having their choice food,women,power,e.t.c? whereas,in this age,we have coward human beings who can not bare to have their desires disappointed. Every little disappointment,na suicide don cross their minds. u lose bet, suicide. u lose gf, suicide. u no get money, suicide. Aba! |
