On Friday, December 28, Igbos will mark the abolishing of Osu caste system in the southeast

- The event will take place in the presence of traditional rulers from various communities in the region

- The pronouncement to abolish the caste systems would be made at a special Nri royal monument for treasure custody known as ‘Ikpo Eze-Nri’

Traditional rulers across Igboland are in Anambra state to abolish the age-long practice of Osu and other caste system in the region, Guardian reports.

Converged in the state are rulers from Agwukwu Nri, Anaocha council of Anambra, Etche and Ikwere of Rivers state.

Also other traditional title holders including prominent leaders in Igbo land will be present to witness the end of the practice which has discriminated the Osu (outcast), ‘Ohu’ (slave) and ‘Ume’ (incestophile).

The Osu caste system is a practice in Igbo society where some people are tagged second-class citizens because they were believed to have been dedicated to some deity.

Also, the Osu person is forbidden from engaging in marital or business relationships with a freeborn including taking traditional title.

Speaking on the preparation, the personal assistant to the Nri regent, Prince Ifeanyi Onyeso, said the pronouncement to abolish the caste systems would be made at a special Nri royal monument for treasure custody known as ‘Ikpo Eze-Nri’.

Onyeso, who is also the spokesperson for the organisers said certain punishments would also be pronounced on the Nri throne against individuals or groups that go contrary to the pronouncement.

“Whoever that calls anybody Osu or practices the Osu caste system will be visited with punishment. Only an Nri man can come and carry out any cleansing of an abomination before the curse that befalls such person can be removed,” Onyeso said.

However, contrary to the agreement of the traditional rulers, the Adama chief priest of Nri, Amobi Nduka, said the preparations did not follow the tradition of the land.

Nduka urged all sons and daughters of Igbo land to “ignore the nugatory proclamation.” He said while he and the Eze Nri had never been in support of the discriminatory practice, revocation of such must follow due process and executed by the relevant authority.

Adama said in a statement: “Such a nugatory proclamation should be ignored. He who is imbued with ‘nso’ cannot abrogate nor revoke ‘nso ana’. Abrogatee cannot in pari passu be an abrogator.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that traditional rulers in the southeast jointly set Friday, December 28, to put an end to the age-long and controversial Osu caste system in the region.

The monarchs in a statement on Tuesday, November 6, said that the event marking the abolition of the Osu caste system in Igbo land would take place at the Nri Palace in Anambra.

If u like call the Pope n hold a special prayer session or better still make it a criminal offence. The Osu Caste System will never leave igboland. It's inhumane, discriminatory and destroys life but that is human nature for you.
The African community is a close knit one. What one does is believed to affect the community. Christianity has not be able to take away some beliefs n customs in igboland. And we igbos are Nigeria's Christians. We embraced the White Man's religion whole heartedly.

These people are just wasting their time

presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has unveiled his plan to halt the escalating banditry in Zamfara state.
According to him, he will send a combined detachment of 30,000 military and police personnel to flush out the bandits who have worsened the security situation in the state, within the first 30 days of his swearing-in as President in 2019.
Atiku, who made this promise on Friday in a video he posted on Twitter, slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for deploying huge number of security operatives to Osun and Ekiti States to grab power for his political party but unable to do same to secure the lives and property of Zamfarans.
He said: “I am following all you (Zamfarans) have been going through in the hands of bandits who steal, kill and destroy your properties.
“My heart bleeds for you and I urge you all to accept my prayer that the Almighty Allah will bring an end to your sufferings.
“I am contesting for the office of the president of Nigeria. I am assuring you that if you, the good people of Zamfara, elect me as President on February 16, 2019 within a month of my swearing-in, I will send a combined force of 30,000 soldiers and policemen to stay in Zamfara and make sure that the bandits you see today, you will see no more.
“When election took place in Ekiti and Osun states, President Buhari sent 30,000 policemen there. I want to assure you that it is more important for me to secure your lives and properties than for me to secure political power for my party.”
