Preface
Proverbs are wise sayings. They are usually short, pithy statements of general truth. Proverbs are largely based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. They are often metaphorical.
The word ‘proverb' is said to have originated from the Latin word proverbium meaning concrete statement. These statements usually express a truth of any kind ranging from spiritual, practical to philosophical. The dictionary defines a proverb as a concrete and short saying, which is often repeated.
Miguel de Cervantes defines a proverb as "a short sentence based on long experience". The wisdom is in the form of a general observation about the world or as a piece of advice intended to make us aware of the world in which we live. Proverbs also exhibit simple rhyme and elegant balance. Sometimes proverbs also describe a basic rule of conduct.

There are mainly two primary sources of proverbs—the common man and the wise people. Proverbs are often borrowed across lines of languages, religions and even time. Something commonly experienced is documented by the wise men and in the course of time becomes a proverb. Sometimes thoughts expressed by the wise men are liked by common men so much, so that they become an integral part of life. Besides, many popular proverbs have their origin in scriptures such as the Bible , the Gita , the Ramayan , etc. Created by the people across caste, creed, community and culture, borrowed from ancient and neighbouring cultures; proverbs have been accumulated over the centuries.
Some of the proverbs are locally popular while a majority of them are shared around the world.
