To the doctor, your skin is like the morning paper. And just as your scour the paper for local news, so the doctor looks over your skin to gauge your health.

Your tongue tells the doctor a lot, but the state of your skin tells him a lot more. Your skin isn’t just a flexible bag holding you in. It’s the most complex and useful insulted container that’s ever been devised. Man has no other material to duplicate its purpose.

Depending on your job or race, your skin is just less than a quarter of an inch thick, unless you bring eyelids into it which are around a thirty second of an inch thick.

Circus Act

The skin is the largest of the body organs. Its extraordinary functions, i.e. getting rid of your perspiration and surface dirt, and controlling heat and cold make it just as important as the heart.

There’s true story told of a circus act where for a sensation, the leading artiste immerse herself in gold paint. Because her skin couldn’t perform its normal function of breathing and regulating the body, she died within few minutes.

Interfere with the workings of your skin, and the result are invariably fatal. But treat your skin well, and it will do the same to you.

Not only those it protect you from germs and viruses but by its fine network of blood vessels and your temperature normal both in desert heat and arctic cold.

Complaints

The skin itself though is subject to lengthy list of complaints ranging from boils, pimples, warts and ringworm to athlete’s foot and eczema. Dermatologists are skilled in recognising various abnormalities that trigger off superficial or more complaints.

Badness of the may be due to fever and irritation. Redness of the palm of the hands, and little spider like lesions all over the body suggest a liver that isn’t working properly. Liver trouble also makes the skin hypersensitive to light because of a shortage of nicotinic acid.

Nervous Disorders

But it is generally recognised that various forms of nervous disorders set off the majority of skin complaints. Many medical authorities say that some simple forms of dermatitis are just safety valves for human nervous system.

“Neurodermatitis”, as it’s called, comes about with the stress of modern day living, job dissatisfaction, and everyday worries.

It has been said that it’ best for the nervous symptoms to work themselves out on the skin rather than on the digestive system or on the inner organs of your body where they may produce more harm or ever serious damage.

Nervous disorders may reflect themselves in itching and sometimes the skin on an arm or leg may ripple regularly like a wave – a true sign that there’s a nervous disorder present.

But to a dermatologist, itching may be the first sign of diabetes, or one of the early symptoms of a condition related to kidney disease. Itching may also be sign that the kidney or liver are not doing their job eliminating waste properly.

Changes in colour

Hard rounded areas, or plaques, as they are called may confirm diabetes, and if they are present on the eyelids they may indicate the presence of a disease that can impair the proper working of the main blood vessels and the coronary arteries.

Changes in your skin’s colour are often indications of glanular disorder. The appearance of large brownish sports – not moles -on normal white skin, may indicative of a condition called “addison’s disease.

But let this condition not be confused with changes in an established mole. Any changes in a mole, whether it be on the face, arm or leg, should be shown to a doctor straightaway. For it may indicate skin cancer called “melanoma”, which spreads rapidly.

Lumps

Little lumps or nodules in the skin may be an early sign of internal cancer, for as it spreads it sends little feelers or nodules to the surface. An early sample from such a growth as soon as it’s noticed will frequently tell the doctor where trouble spot is, for the tiny lump produces cells of a particular type of growth.
This does not mean you should go rushing off to the surgery with every little pimple or wart you get, but just be on guard against obstinate lumps that refuse to shift. In most cases, they are nothing at all to worry about, but it’s just as well to be on the safe side.

But if you have a healthy skin, then it should be firm, elastic, and a normal colour, depending on your race. The sebaceous glands keep your skin supple. Your skin temperature is about consistent with room temperature, roughly six and a half degrees less than your body temperature.

To treat your skin well, keep it clean with ordinary soap and water. This will hinder infection.

But should your skin signs of sickness, Let the doctor read it for you and you may be prevented from suffering.
