So, between January and November when Ambode was fighting Tinubu tooth and nail, Ambode was also planning to make Tinubu's boy the HOS. Jimi Agbaje is mad.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has faulted the appointment of Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola as the new Head of Service in the state, saying the action sacrificed career progression and was ‘politics taken too far.’

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had, on Monday, sworn in Muri-Okunola as the 21st HoS in the state, in place of Mrs. Folashade Adesoye who retired in December 2018.

At 46 years old, Muri-Okunola is said to be the youngest ever HoS in the history of Lagos State.

Agbaje, in a statement by his campaign organisation’s Directorate of Media and Publicity, on Thursday, described the appointment as “insensitive, unjust and disruptive of the civil service hierarchy.”

He said, “Indications are that, to pave way for the assisted meteoric rise of the new HoS, the Lagos State Government had, between January and November 2018, forcefully retired no fewer than 21 permanent secretaries considered as superiors and more experienced to the new man.

“There is a sense of shock and injustice in all this. It is bound to create bad blood and injustice within the system.

“These are seasoned personnel capable of fitting perfectly and effectively in that office. But in this era of impunity, they have been offloaded prematurely.”

The PDP candidate dismissed the new HoS as “part of the oligarchy controlling and monopolising all the levers of power in the state,” citing his position as the Personal Assistant to former Governor Bola Tinubu, which, according to Agbaje, imbued Muri-Okunola with “very abnormal privileges.”

“Muri-Okunola lacks broad-based exposure. Whoever becomes HoS is usually a civil servant with widespread exposure, as he must be abreast of all issues related to the bureaucracy and governance.

“But all these rules and traditions have been bent for this appointment,” Agbaje added.

He stated that the development portends “grave danger” to the state’s bureaucracy, established on the foundations of merit-nurtured progression through the career ladder.

He said, “It is befuddling to imagine how officers, who are 15 years older than the new HoS, will take orders and directives from him.

“From all indications, this might be too far-fetched and difficult and it has a way of impacting negatively on governance, taking into cognizance that the civil service is the engine room of not just government but of the society also.”

I respect Agbaje's views but I disagree with his position on Hakeem Muri Okunola

First why not Hakeem based on the reforms he has done with the lands registry?...why not a younger man, people have ruled nigeria in the past in their 30s. Hakeem is a brilliant and effective fellow.

We have an older and more experienced president and this has not brought us to the promised land

Agbaje is younger than Bode George so why is he the Pdp flag bearer for Lagos.

I am happy each time I hear loads of people are retired in the civil service because many of them are richer than the department and ministries they manage......the civil service is one area government spends most of taxpayers money without requisite value. The cost of governance is too high.

While the families of the retired folks are angry, the newly appointed ones are rejoicing that their time has come

Agbaje should not cry wolf where there is none

Let him go contest in a political election.

Civil service rules are not about politics. You pay your due diligently and rise through the ranks. Learning the ropes thoroughly over the years.

To oversea the state bureaucracy overall, you need to have distinguished yourself for a very long time. Others who have paid their due should not be retired prematurely just to create space.

Murtala Mohamed made that mistake when he took over in a coup in 1975.

In the name of fighting corruption, he retired seasoned civil servants, most of whom were trained abroad before entering colonial civil service.

Nigerian civil service never recovered from that fiasco.

But because of the way Murtala died, most people are unwillingly to mention that fundamental error he made.

In Nigeria sentiments over-ride reason & truth.

He should know that seniority in the civil service is based on career progression and not by age, if one attains a directorate level at a younger age, it means the older ones must be submissive to him or her, they can't retire them because it's not the same with the military.

How come Agbaje is the one complaining and not the retirees? Don't the retires have names and a voice to speak out if indeed they were wrongfully retired before their due departure?

How come he is complaining that they have been retired/retiring since January 2018, yet he waited till January 2019 to make it public discourse?

All these wild tales from PDP should stop.

If any affected civil servant feels wronged by the state, let them take on the state government legally.

See the mindset of the perpetual failure that wants to lead Lagos. Is it by age that positions and responsibility and leadership is afforded to one who is able to take up the challenge?

So because there are those whose ages are well older than the HOS, they should not cooperate with their superiors at work? Is promotion and leadership by age or performance/ability?

So Jimi Agbaje will refuse to obey orders of his superior if he is well older than that superior/supervising colleague?

Jimi Agbaje is a disappointment.
Don't quote in out of context to suit your analogy.
First, this is Yoruba land where respect is part of the culture. It is easier for a younger subordinate to assist his older superior to carry his hand bag than for an older subordinate to do same for a younger superior. Even if the older subordinate wants to do such, morals and culture will not be on the side of the younger superior.

Now you can imagine if the the older subordinate is well educated to...

Can you tell us at what age a 46 year old man could have entered the civil service to have risen to the level of a HOS and you expect people who have spent 25 to 30 years in same organisation to accept command from him willingly without any sense of bad blood
