Enugu state commissioner for chieftaincy Matters sells Igweship certficate from ₦500,000 and above. Consequently, many communities in Enugu state are boiling because of the process of selection of Igwe in various old and new autonomous communities. Investigation has confirmed that the commissioner for Chieftancy collects huge amount of money from aspirants and thereafter imposes them on the communities against the wish of the people. Most of these aspirants buy the throne so that they can receive N5 million community development grant from Enugu State government. As a matter of fact, many communities are in deep crisis because of the N5 million community development grant. Another reliable source, an igweship aspirant boasted that he paid the sum of ₦500,000 to the commissioner to buy the igweship throne of Aguibeje, a communities in Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA. He further boasted that he must recoup all the money he spent from the N5 million community development grant, revenues from the community and other entitlements from government.
Although the people of these communities are still revolting against the decisions, the commissioner has gone ahead to announce some of these aspirants as the Igwe-elect of their various communities. This process is now causing a lot of divisions and crisis in some communities in Enugu State. Imposition of Igweship against the choice of the people led to gruesomely murder of a monarch in June 2018. The ugly incident occurred in Ogbozinne Akpugo Autonomous Community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state, where the monarch was gruesomely murdered.
