The unrest in Gabon, the ill-health of her president and the under performance of the current administration has now taken a toll in the oil-rich nation causing the military arm to stage a coup d'etat. The military is saying it has seized power from the President, Ali Bongo - led government in the country who's family have ruled the country for 50 years.

The BBC reports that soldiers in the African country said they launched a coup to restore democracy.

They took control of the national radio station in the early hours of Monday to read a short statement announcing a “National Restoration Council”. The BBC also reported that tanks and armed vehicles were on the streets of the capital Libreville.

President Bongo took over power in 2009 and since then has become a nightmare to the oil-rich country. He reportedly suffered a stroke in October and received treatment in Morocco. Mr Bongo sought to put an end to the rumours about his health with a New Year message in which he said he was feeling fine.

Soldiers said they had been disappointed by the message, calling it “a pitiful sight” and a “relentless attempt to cling onto power.”

Though after 18 hours the news broke, the Gabon government claims the situation is "under control". All five of the rebels who tried to take charge have now been arrested by the authorities.

The junior officers claimed they seized power "to restore democracy" in oils rich Gabon, where the ailing leader's family has ruled for 50 years. Tanks and armoured vehicles could be seen in the capital Libreville.

One of the rebels was on the run for a brief period, before being found hiding under a bed, reports Radio France Internationale.

"The situation is calm. The gendarmes who are often stationed there gave taken control of the entire area around the radio and TV headquarters, so everythingis back to normal", said Guy-Bertrand Mapangou government spokesman.
