The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) delegation arrived at the ministry at exactly 4:30 p.m yesterday, the government delegation arrived without the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the government delegation was led by Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment.


The meeting took place at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.

If their is no changes, academic activities should resume in the public Universities next week as Federal Government has approved over N35.4 billion for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).


Dr Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, in his address after the meeting yesterday, said that, the majority of ASUU demands have been met including the release of N15.389.940,335.71 billion for payment of salary shortfalls.He further said that, it was remitted on December 31,2018.

With respect to him, the Federal Government is also in the process of releasing another N20
billion for payment of earned allowances for university lecturers.

According to him, ASUU is expected to feed the Government back between Wednesday, 9th or Thursday, 10th January, 2019 to sign the agreements reached by both parties.

At the Meantime, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the ASUU National President reported that, the National Executive Committee of the union need consultation and will evaluate their decisions based on the new commitment by the government. With respect to ASUU National President, it is only after that meeting of the ASUU leadership that the union will pronounce its stands on the strike action going on presently.
