One of the common challenges students face in Nigerian schools is being broke. As a student, there will definitely be a time when you won’t be financially stable to cater for your personal and academic needs. In this post, we will be looking at to make money as a student in Nigeria while maintaining a good academic performance. As a student, your lecture time/duration have affects your ‘free’ greatly so we will be highlighting opportunities that will suit your lecture and free time.

Within the walls of a higher institution lies many business opportunities waiting to be exploited by serious minded and result driven students. With the advent of the internet, the opportunities have increased and yet few people know how to utilize and profit from them. Below is a comprehensive list on how to make money as a student in Nigeria

ACADEMIC WRITING AND ASSIGNMENTS
Ever heard of term papers, research assignments, and project works? These are profitable academic services you can offer as a student in school and make money. Many students are too busy, ignorant or lazy to write term papers, research topics as well as generate and compile materials for their project works thereby providing you the opportunity to provide them with this service and rake in money that can sustain you in a semester or session. While in school, I do charge within the range of 1500 naira and 2500 naira to write term papers for other students in different levels. What you need to succeed in this are a creative writing and proofreading skill, internet research skill, and working knowledge of MS Word. If you can conduct a good research on a subject matter and extract valuable points from the research findings, then you can produce an excellent work that will earn you referrals and repeat businesses.

FREELANCE WRITING
As a freelance writer, your job is to provide quality writing services to businesses or individuals on an agreed price. You can decide to work on online freelance platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, iwriter, Freelaance, PeopleperHour, Fivesquid, etc. Additionally, you can provide freelance writing services offline to people in need of it. Many people find it hard to put their ideas in writing and it’s a money making opportunity if you can help them with such task. As a freelance writer, you can focus on a specific niche/area or be generic. Also, you need persuasive writing style and good research skill to excel as a freelance writer. As a freelance writer, you can provide copywriting, content writing, ebook writing, speech writing, news, as well as rewriting service.

HAIR SALON/BARBER SHOP
This is a profitable business for male and female students. The secret to earning a good amount from this business is to master your craft, deliver exceptional service, and offer good prices. While in school, this business prevented few students from joining the “broke students’ gang”. If you are staying in a school hostel, you can use the space outside your room or within the hostel as your shop. If you are staying off campus, your lodge can be used to render the service. One thing I like about this service is that it is mainly offered in the evening and on weekends when students are mostly free thereby posing no serious threats to academic activities. Male students record more income with this business han their female counterparts.

SNACKS AND SOFT DRINKS
During my school days, there were three female students that sustained themselves financially by hawking snacks and drinks like zobo and kunu to the lecture halls and student hostels. Majority of students in higher institutions skip breakfasts to meet up with early morning lecture or other academic activities thereby making this business a lucrative one. Your only task is to prepare or buy well prepared snacks, put them in a clean container and take them to lecture halls, library or hostels and watch the market sell itself within a short time. To boost sales, add zobo, kunu or other soft drinks to your sales menu because they are a nice combination with snacks.

TUTORIALS
This is not for everyone. To succeed in this, you must have a deep knowledge of the course as well as passion for inculcating knowledge in people. Everything is not taught in the lecture room which makes tutorials the best option for students to learn more and gain clearer understanding of different subject matters. People that earn more from tutorials are those who teach complex courses or courses that students find difficult and are scared to fail them. This doesn’t mean that other courses won’t survive too. It simply means that there is more profit in those courses.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Every student, either rich or poor, takes pictures because photographs will serve as a memory or reminder of their time in school when they graduate. A part time and full time student can make money from the photography business without being distracted from his or her academics. All you need is a good camera, a space, photo printing machine, and exceptional skills. Part time students can venture into cinematography because they have more free time than full time students.

PAST QUESTION PAPERS AND COURSE MATERIALS
There is one thing that every student is scared of and that is FAILURE. No student wants to fail or even score an “E” or “D” in a course. The least grade which is the target of every student is “C”. In other to avoid cases of exam or test failure, they waste no time in sourcing for past question papers and relevant course materials that will enhance their academic performance. To make money from this idea, you need to source, organize and sell past question papers and important course materials to students looking for examination and general academic success.

BUYING AND SELLING
The purchase and sale of fast moving consumer goods in a school environment is a profitable venture for full time and part time students. Things to sell include perishable products, male and female underwear, fashion and make up products, power banks, etc.

COMPUTER CENTER
Computer center here excludes cyber café. The advent of internet enabled phones crippled the business of cyber café therefore it is not advisable to start such in a student environment as there will be low patronage. When we talk about computer center, we refer to the business of printing and photocopying. This is a profitable business in any school environment as there are many things to type, print, and photocopy. If you are financially buoyant, I advise that you start up this business. Even with the saturated market, you will still break even in the business.

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS
Majority of university students love social activities. They all want to “FLEX” their time in school and make each of them memorable. If you can come up with unique social gatherings like football competitions, parties, comedy and music events, then you can make a fortune from ticket sales {keep them affordable. Remember you are dealing with students} and sponsorships.

Other things you can do as a student to make money in Nigeria as include Information Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, Mini Importation, Blogging, CPA Marketing, Laundry Business, etc.
