AS the $44.861million (N16.150 billion) Warri Channel dredging contract nears completion, controversy is currently trailing the project’s contract award.

Some maritime experts, who spoke to Vanguard Maritime Report on the issue, explained that the contract will not service the port community in Warri for the long term as a result of the high siltation (rate of return of sand to the channel after dredging) level of the area.

They pointed out that the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, are aware of this and that they were planning to build a wall on both sides of the channel before the dredging to prevent siltation.

Recall that the former Managing Director of NPA, Habib Abdullahi, said then that the Authority is aware of the problem and has commenced plans to address it.

Abdullahi, who was represented at a meeting in Lagos by the then General Manager in charge of Public Affairs, Emmanuel Ebubuegu, said two firms; Royal Ascony, was looking at the break waters and Ace Consulting was working on the pre-dredging.

According to NPA boss, “The study of geography tells us that at the lower course of the river, the level of sedimentation is very high. Incidentally, the ports of Warri, Calaber and Port Harcourt are all situated at the lower course of river. If you do not do something to address the hindrance properly, you will always be fighting with nature.”

Chief Executive Officer, Kamany Marine Services Limited, Charles Okorefe, faulted the contract, stating that it is politically motivated.

Speaking with Vanguard Maritime Report, Okorefe explained that NPA is aware that the present dredging is not a lasting solution but went ahead all the same because they want to score political point.

Former National Financial Secretary of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA and a Warri based Customs Broker, Val Johnbull  Oribhabo, said welcome the dredging but expressed worry whether the project will be properly done for the benefit of operators in the area.

Recall that the contract was awarded to Dredging International Services Nigeria (DISN) Limited, a subsidiary of Dredging International Services (Cyprus) Limited.

Lol its weird people read headline them pretend they know what article is about. All these preprogrammed responses are funny. Anyway these ports are going to continue to need routine dredging to keep them at 7 meters.

They pointed out that the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, are aware of this and that they were planning to build a wall on both sides of the channel before the dredging to prevent siltation.

Nigerians assuredly recognizes the options before us come February 2019, obviously the right choice is an Atiku team[A-Team] at the helm of affairs. Every vote cast for Wazirin Adamawa will be an eloquent repudiation of the A.P.C. government, our votes will mark an epoch as well as monuments for us and generation yet unborn because through the ballot box we will challenge sense of lethargy ,hopelessness, resignations, frustrations and the hypocrisy of an oppressive capricious A.P.C led government . An Atiku Presidency will further defeat the militating factors that impede our journey to a deserved greatness amongst the comity of nations. In deference to President Obama and for our people in the intervening months leading up to the elections, Our votes will proclaim “an end to the petty grievances, lopsided corruption, insurgency, nepotism and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas that for so long have strangled our politics” Alhaji Atiku Abubakar buoyed by the audacity of hope on your imminent emergence as the next civilian President of our beloved country. I make bold to write that your mandate to rule Nigeria come 2019 is a “divine call” merely vested on you in trust and as a caretaker for the masses of Nigeria. It is neither for any emerging cabal nor political mongers even the over patronized elites cannot appropriate undue benefits. It would be in recognition of the “unsung, uncelebrated and anonymous Nigerians. Men and women scattered across the country

The best case scenario is use these ports till the new deep seaports like Lekki, Ibom and Badagry are ready. These high maintenance ports are just money suck. Everyone should know this current dredging isnt permanent solution.

This guys are still complaining, b4 they said it was deliberate act to keep those ports dormant so that Lagos will be the only functioning port in Nigeria, today it is not necessary and it will not work just because it was done by APC.
Nigerians are sick upstairs.

Lol!!! Funny thing is that there are many points in the report but the reporter only chose the negative point and made it headline.

This shows where our problem is in this country, we prefer negative things and close our eyes to positive and that is why everything has been negative.

I like that word "politically stupid" we especially southerners are politically stupid while the northerners are not that stupid, they wants everything that comes their way no matter what party it is coming from but the educated stupid southern will either block a project, discourage a project or hate a projects because they hate the party or the person representing the party.

I was amazed how Saraki, Ike ekeremadu and most of the PDP southern senators removed 80% of southern projects from 2018 budgets all because they don't want the President or his party to use it to score political point yet the stupid Nigerian youth were praising them.
Funny thing is that there are many northern senators who defected to PDP yet they did not remove Northern projects from the budget to hinder the presidents popularity.
We southerners always think we are smart yet we are the most foolish, the stupid common sense senator was part of them oo.
