The size of toothpaste should not exceed a size of a pea. It is sufficient to clean your teeth efficiently. Many people are in a habit of covering their toothbrush completely with a paste layer for brushing. This is a wrong practice.

In earlier times, our ancestors used to brush their teeth with datun (neem stalk), and it cleaned their teeth well due to its fibrous property and also its antiseptic nature. In addition toothpaste provides the fluoride and flavoring agent like mint which imparts a freshness in breath.

Using plain water to brush your teeth will do no good. Simply using brush with water would be like, bathing using a loofah but no soap. Toothpaste serves the necessity of a medium between teeth and the brush.

Its abrasive particle further helps in cleaning the tooth, which is common in every toothpaste. No toothpaste is any special. Except the medicated toothpastes which should be used only when prescribed by the doctor.

Toothpaste is a tremendous delivery vehicle for fluoride, but the abrasives in it (used to give a cleaner mouth feel and help polish off stains, etc.) can cause toothbrush abrasion. Plaque removal can be achieved just by wetting your toothbrush bristles and brushing. Adding toothpaste is done simply to leverage the protective benefits of fluoride.

If you use too much toothpaste, you can cause the irreversible damage to your enamel. Additionally, swallowing fluoride contained in toothpaste could be harmful, and there's more likelihood of swallowing larger amounts of fluoride if you use a lot of toothpaste.
