Malizumedia:
Following the agreement between Federal Government and lecturers, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to suspend the ongoing strike.

On Monday, January 7, 2019, the Federal Government reached an agreement with ASUU leaders in a meeting held in Abuja.

According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who was also at the meeting, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N20billion, to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 to 2012 verified earnings in the universities.

Ngige added that earned allowances will be released to ASUU as soon as the process is completed.

Despite the agreement between both parties, ASUU president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, while speaking with journalist after the meeting said the strike would not be called off.

Ogunyemi said the strike could only be called off after the union’s NEC meeting. He however, did not state when the meeting will hold.

NANS has now urged ASUU to call off the strike having reached an agreement with the government.

In a statement on Tuesday signed by the NANS president, Comrade Bamidele Akpan, the student body accused the lecturers of not pursuing the interest of Nigerian students.

I hate ASUU eh, I have never liked that body.
The idea of education, and definitely tertiary institutions gave rise to this body. Yet they sit and decide students fate as if they sat brought their idea of the university, funded it and so would dictate how things are run.
The funding and standardisation of our varsities can be checkmated by the NASS. ASUU hide under this deceit for their own personal gains.
How can people pay large amount of school fees and be put out of school?

Our labour laws do not override the constitution.

This APC government is the most unfortunate one ever. They release fake news every other day, but scream 'fake news' when the news does not favour them.

Its because if people like you ASUU wants to revitalize our schools and our education standard. ASUU has been on trend for weeks now yet you can't spell ASUU, you can't even spell STRIKE. I pity this country where we have undergraduates who don't have anything spectacular up in their brain!!! There was no agreement reached! And stop crying fake news of any agreement

Don't you guys get it, no agreement was reached, FG submitted a proposal then went on media to say an agreement was reached. Is understanding that difficult.

am just frustrated
according to ASUU president words...he said that the fg release just 15bn out of the 200bn naira agreed upon and that shows that they have not started yet...He said that the proposal will have to be taken to the NEC before they can take any decision

The so called, fund release to pay salary shortfalls and earned allowance was just one issue out of the many ASUU is fighting for. Even the 15billion is just a VERBAL AGREEMENT by government not a written one, so please go through what was said by both parties and STOP reading headlines.
PS: For those who do not know one of the main reason why ASUU is on strike is because the FED's are currently trying to implement "paying of school fees plan" which will be the first stage in them actualising their end goal which is the privatisation of Federal universities. ASUU is not against the measure of students paying higher fees but they are vehemently against the level of the hike in price which is currently pegged at #700000 per session minimum)
