A petrol tanker explosion which happened today along the Calabar-Odukpani Highway in Odukpani local government area of Cross River State, has left many dead, according to reports..

It was gathered the petrol tanker fell while trying to negotiate the bend with residents rushing to the scene to scoop petrol.

Eyewitnesses reported the clamour for petrol resulted into a spark as some of the residents used metal containers to scoop the product.

This led to an explosion which killed several people at once.

At the scene, the police tried to contain the situation as the fire raged.

A majority of the victims sustained third degree injuries and are currently at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

Your friend sued cos of his account, abi?
Doesn't stop the police from arresting him for obtaining by false pretences.

They can still arrest him even if this matter is in court.

Assuming the police already arrested him with regards to obtaining by false pretences and in the course of arrest or detention, his rights were infringed upon, he could have sued the police.

He's suing for civil action, police matter is criminal action. They don't stop one another.

Your friend did the wrong thing. Since the police had a court order to freeze his account, he should have gone to the police and sorted it out. It's a small matter but he has complicated it.

Lastly, it's not your friend, it is you.

Lol....He said is not my friend that is me,you wilnt beat me if i confirm that it is me nah...

Anyway thanks for the advice

And this is one of the reasons.
The country has become so chaotic and unsafe that just going out and coming back is a miracle.

Everyone has a reason including the dead. God has saved many but many changed their own destiny to die stupidly and foolishly because they are greedy.

I feel no single pity for people who get burnt while trying to scoop petrol from a petrol tanker. They went in knowing fully well the consequences.

Before anyone starts saying its poverty, don't forget that even with poverty your brain is still intact. There is a reason God gave us brains, we should learn to use it angry

No one should come here and start blaming poverty...How can someone rush to scope fuel at such scene knowing fully aware that his life is at risk? some even went with metal containers..This act is just greediness and covetousness, same way they rush food and drinks at a party even though the have plenty at home..No wonder Nigerians have the lowest IQ in the world..

It's so sad that people are so ignorant. The police officers did their best to prevent the raging crowd from scooping the fuel. The transporters were trying to transload the fuel. Nobody could tell if it was a phone call or the hot weather that caused the explosion. I passed the scene of the accident immediately it happened. I saw the driver in tears and pain sitting on the road after odupkani federal housing estate.i saw the police and road safety trying to render assistant to the driver. There were about three guys with kegs busy scooping fuel, the policemen warned them to stop but they refused. The place became rowdy with more youths and women hustling to get their share of the spilled fuel. As I type no fire fighter tank has come to put out the fire.
If another tanker falls tomorrow in that same area people would still go and scoop fuel. We never learn in this country. Standard of living and reasoning is almost below zero. Hell on earth was the case of those that got burnt today. I commiserate with the management of fynfield and rainoil company

Hmmm. ....nawa o it's well

Poverty didn't force them to scoop the fuel but foolishness for not knowing that metal or even the mobile phones could ignite fire because they were already consumed by greed to maximize the opportunity. One idiot may have answered a phone call to inform all his kinsmen to turn up for free fuel.
Anyway RIP to them. That's the only tribute owed to the dead.

Stop wasting your time. It won't because they are not stupid. You think it is only Nigeria that poor people are? People are blaming poverty as if it is human. Greed, foolishness, laziness, and infact wickedness are the reasons why they died. I will not say it's lack of awareness, because this has been happening for years now (even the Jesse fire of 90s) and people are quite aware of the impending dangers in scooping petroleum products.

Just like a typical runs girl in Nigeria knows the risks involved in their slaying runs. But most will tell you that other victims are not smart. They forget this was what the previous victims once said before their last ill fated rackets.

For those saying they blame poverty for this incident, i put it to you that this has absolutely nothing to do with poverty. Scoping feul or stealing goods (soft drinks, beer, oil or cement etc) from an overturned tanker or articulated vehicle is a criminal act and also suicidal.

Poverty can never justify criminality. Was it every poor person at the scene that jumped in to scoop feul? I believe no. Poverty is never a motivating factor to put one's life and others at risk. Just last month, a truck toppled and spilled vegetable oil into a gutter in Lagos and people quicky jumped into the gutters to scoop the contaminated oil to resell to unsuspecting Nigerians.

Greed and not poverty is the motivating factor for such acts. The same way we engage in Fraud and blame poverty, the government or the white man; these are all excuses for our greedy nature. Perhaps if we as Nigerians put our minds into more legitimate ventures, we wouldnt be poor in the first place.
