President Muhammadu Buhari has again appointed a Northern Moslem, Mohammed Adamu, as Inspector General of Police (IGP) despite growing complaints of nepotism against the administration.

The appointment of Mr. Adamu came after protracted public outrage against alleged partisanship of the outgoing IGP Ibrahim Idris and calls for his removal.

Mr. Buhari has been seriously criticised for appointing heads of the nation’s security organisations mostly from his Moslem/Fulani stock against the provisions of the Federal Character Principle and the nation’s diversity.

A statement from the Force Public Relations Office, Jimoh Mohsood, said Ibrahim Idris formerly retired from service as the 19th indigenous IGP on Tuesday, January 15 after clocking 60 years.

“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria has consequently directed that the outgoing Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris to hand over to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, as the Acting Inspector General of Police,” Mr. Jimoh indicated.

“The outgoing Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, deeply thank the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the opportunity given to him to serve under his administration as Inspector General of Police.

“He also sincerely expresses gratitude to all Nigerians across the Country for the cooperation and support they accorded him and the entire personnel of the Force during his tenure. He enjoined them to extend the same level of support and assistance to his successor, Ag. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, mni.

“The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, mni hails from Lafia, Nasarawa State and a holder of BSc. Geography. He enlisted into the Force on 1st February 1986 as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
