A retired Assistant Superintendent of Police and 10 others have been arrested by the police in Bauchi State for allegedly stealing two GBW 10KVA generators belonging to the National Public Security Communication System.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Kamal Abubabakar, disclosed this on Thursday while parading the suspects before journalists at the command headquarters in Bauchi.

He said, “On January 16, 2019, around 1pm, following a tip-off, operatives attached to the State Intelligence Bureau of the command intercepted 11 suspects.

“The suspects were arrested in possession of two GBW 10KVA power generators vandalised at two sites of the National Public Security Communication System project in Alkaleri Local Government Area, along the Gombe Road in Bauchi State.”

He added that their action was sabotaging the Federal Government’s efforts of equipping the police and other security agencies with modern security gadgets to perform their duties of protecting lives and property.

Abubakar, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “The suspects were on the wanted list of the command in connection with vandalism and theft at some telecommunications site equipment belonging to both the government and private companies in Bauchi State and neighbouring states of Gombe and Yobe.”

He said the gang leader, Fidelis Ewona, and 10 others, including four drivers, had been arrested.

He gave the names of the other suspects as Alhaji Dangombe, Yusuf Ahmed, Lawan Ahmed, Mohammed Yusuf Yellow (driver), Musasaddam Sabo Keke, Ibrahim Garba (driver) and Mohammed Zakariya, all of Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi.

Others are Mohammed Mals Yusuf, who is an engineer; a Yankari workshop driver, Okasha Umar; and Abdullahi Adam of the Kofar Ran Market.

The police spokesman said that the suspects voluntarily confessed to the crime and were giving useful information to the police to aid their investigation.

He said some of the exhibits recovered included a crane loaded with number plate NM 200 LSR and a J5 truck with number plate BAU 548 CA.

Investigations, according to him, are ongoing, after which the suspects will be charged to court.

Speaking with Northern City News, the gang leader, Ewona, who said he was a retired police officer, admitted to the crime.

“I retired as an officer of the Nigeria Police Force; I was an ASP before my retirement in 2011,” he said.
