The President of the Association of Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi has on Monday evening said that institutions that pulled out of the ongoing strike and opened their doors to students will regret their action in future.

Ogunyemi made this known while speaking to The Punch correspondent, who asked on his view on the perceived disunity in the union’s ranks.

The Punch reports that since the commencement of the industrial action no fewer than 6 institutions who are members of the union had pulled out of the industrial action.

The President hinted that members that pulled out of the campaign were pressured to abandon the fight by their vice-chancellors, or governing councils.

Ogunyemi said,

When ASU or ASUP is on strike it should be binding on all chapters.Nowaadays some will pull out and expected to benefit from the outcome of the strike. That is why Unions are becoming laughing stocks before government.

You can't do anything

Your members sexually abuse women, sell marks and abscond from classes while taking huge salaries in a country where minimum wage is 18k.

You've never gone on strike to weed out bad egg lecturers or until anti student policies are abolished. You've never set up hotlines to report, investigate and punish erring lecturers. It's always been about your fvcking stomachs.
That said but don't forget that lack of funds and pensions also is a factor for the things you mentioned above.... thinking aloud.

Nice one. A lot of illiterates posing as students are insulting ASUU instead of telling the federal government to meet their demands. Country that don't invest in Education. Yẹyẹ third world country.

Very unfortunate!

Parents and their wards don't even understand the issues. They think it's all about salary matters.

ASUU also is not doing serious public relations to make their demands clear and understandable to the Nigerian public.

The cause of this wahala from inception of industrial actions by lecturers has always been insensitive and insincere governments that won't do the expected nor carry out agreements signed by them.

Most students and their parents don't really care about learning. All they want is certification anyhow!

The Nigerian elite, like elites elsewhere, want a population that is uninformed to be vulnerable to perpetually exploitation.

Wow!

How much funds or pension do you require to dedicate a free email for reporting sexual and financial crimes against students by lecturers?

Or dedicating some members of the same ASUU executives who collect dues to run investigations?

That's just the bitter truth. Like u said. They all need the certificate. They don't care about what they are passing through. Some students can sit in toilet to recieve lectures.

That is just one of them... Lecturer collect bribe, sell books for money, give excuses for not coming to class and sometimes do not put effort into job but no matter how much you report this lecturer you will also realize some fundamental problems exist. The lecturer you're about to report that he is illegally selling books hasn't been paid for six month, the lecturer you want to report that he didn't complete his curriculum doesn't have the basic lecture facilities. He does not have a microphone for better class managment. you want to report the lecturer his/her student didn't pass well but you remember he is overloaded and teaching too many subject and majority of his/her classes is over-populated. I am not supporting this act or attitude of some bad lecturers but you have to reason things out.. How do you purnish a jobless hungry man that have stolen to eat because he hasn't seen food to eat, you punish a man that collected bribe yet you didn't pay him six month salary......
No bad act should be left unpunished but don't make life unbearable for those who have taken time to work. Government have forsaken them and still want the best out of them. please go to developed country and see the luxury life of lecturers compare to our present level. secondary and primary school is highly delapitated and yet you don't see reason why ASUU and all education union should strike to call the attention of the government
there are other ways except striking but many of them have not been useful till this days. Strike is obviously not a good thing both to lecturers, students, parent and government.. but sometimes maybe two wrongs could make a right(An eye for an eye).
If this fundamentals problem aren't treated forget reporting and punishment, if will only be cutting the leaves while the roots of education decadence (which is goverment negligence) remains deep in the education system.

Federal universities, which are FG funded, hardly leave lecturers for 6 months without salaries

State universities are a different matter. It's the state's responsibility to create only universities they can sustain long term

Even if FG agrees to the negotiations, most states can't pay. So ASUU as a negotiating tool for all universities is defeated in that respect
