The former president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami was controversially removed from office by the former President Goodluck Jonathan despite the objection of NJC and general public outcry.

In a similar and dramatic fashion, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen has just been booted out by President Muhammadu Buhari in what many described as coup d'etat against the judiciary arm of government.

The impunity and total disregard to the rule of law as exhibited by the PDP regimes of the past has now been upped by another party in power with more dictatorial tendency. Our democracy is in shamble, the polity is already heated up with just three weeks to the presidential election and we are left with more questions begging for answers.

What if the previous regimes have solidify this democracy by following the dictates as is done in a saner climes? I am very sure that successive governments would have built on that solid foundation, but alas we are in seriously need of a better foundation.

But the same NJC recommended the reinstatement of justice salami since nothing was found on him by the NJC. Jonathan refused and retired him instead.

The provisos for The removal of the CJN is different from any other Judge in the Judiciary ..The CJN is is the only Judge that require 2/3 of the National Assembly to remove similar to the removal of the president and leadership of NASS and this is not a coincidence but deliberate effort to sustain the independence of all 3 heads of the 3 Arms of govt ... Both cases are not similar

It is you that is highly ignorant of the justice salami case. Did you read your link at all or you have comprehension issues.

Justice salami and the then CJN had serious issues concerning the Sokoto States Election tribunal. The crisis tore the NJC apart then. In order to remove Justice salami as the president of the appeal court, chief justice Katsina ala recommended Salami for promotion to the supreme Court but justice Salami refused the promotion and the NJC supported him.

I agree with your assertion except that of similarity. They are both similar because the Presidents of the federation felt threatened by the actions or inactions of these individuals. Salami was removed because of Osun State gubernatorial election tribunal while Onnoghen was about to inaugurate the election tribunal members for the upcoming elections. The common denominator here is election and politics as emphasized by the OP.

I maintain my earlier stance that there is undue interference in the judicial processes by the executive which our constitution frown against. Its not about the contents of the allegations against these judicial officers but the process of addressing the infractions is totally unacceptable and unconstitutional. Jonathan did it and now Bihari.
