Here’s 20 things you should know about Onnoghen Walter now.

Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu O, GCON was born on the 22nd December, 1950 at Okurike Town, Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.


Justice Onnoghen walter attended the Presbyterian Primary School, Okurike Town between 1959 and 1965.

He later proceeded to Accra, Ghana to attend Odorgorno Secondary School, Adabraka, Ghana between 1967 and 1972 for his West African Examination Council (WAEC) Examination.

He was at Accra Academy, Ghana between 1972 and 1974 for his WAEC (A-Levels) before proceeding to the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana between 1974 and 1977 to obtain his Bachelor of Law Degree (LL.B (Hons)) and graduated with 2nd Class Upper Division.

He attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos between 1977 and 1978 for his B.L certificate.

After obtaining a law degree from the University of Legon, Ghana, he started his career as pupil state counsel at the ministry of justice, Lagos in 1978.

You’re to kindly note that justice onnoghen walter practiced law for several years before he joined the bench.

He made history in Nigeria on April 11, 2014 when he, alongside some of his colleagues, made a landmark pronouncement in the case of two Igbo women, Gladys Ada Ukeje and Maria Nweke, who argued that they should have equal access as men to the inheritance of their parents.

In Igbo culture, women had been disinherited for ages as a result of tradition.

The two women sued the men in their families – and finally got justice as the case moved from the lower to the highest courts in the land.

He also upheld the death sentence meted out to Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, known as “Rev. King”, the general overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, who was accused of murdering a member of his church in 2006.

Futhermore, it was him, who annulled Yar’Adua’s election in December 2008 and called for a fresh one, after the then Gen. Buhari argued that the election was rigged.

Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a judge in Cross River State and a justice of the Court of Appeal.

He rose to become the current Chief Justice of Nigeria when he was appointed by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in 2017 after the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed who attained the prescribed retirement age.

Pupil State Counsel, Ministry of Justice, Ikeja, Lagos State (1978 – 1979).

Partner in the Law Firm of Effiom Ekong & Company, Calabar (1979 – 1988).

Principal Partner/Head of Chambers of Walter Onnoghen & Associates, Calabar (1988 – 1989).

High Court Judge, Cross River State Judiciary (1989 – 1998).
Chairman, Cross River State Armed Robbery and Fire Arms Tribunal (1990 – 1993).

Chairman, Judicial Enquiry into the Crisis between Students of the University of Calabar and Obufa Esuk Orok Community, Calabar (1996).

Chairman, Failed Banks Tribunal, Ibadan Zone (1998). Justice of the Court of Appeal (1998 – 2005).

A Fellow, Chattered Institute of Arbitrators, etc. Hon. Justice W. S. Nkanu Onnoghen has attended several conferences and seminars around the world.

He is a member of the Body of Benchers, a Life Bencher and current Chairman of the Body of Benchers.

Hon. Onnoghen walter was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on 8 June, 2005.

You should also note that Onnoghen Walter was sworn in as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on the 10 of November, 2016. On the 7th day of March, 2017.

Hon. Justice W. S. N. O, GCON was sworn in as the 16th Chief Justice of Nigeria.

He was also awarded the National Honours of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

He is happily married with children.

At first i thought he was corrupt , having been a lawyer and a successful one at that, Walter Onnoghen could have such amount of money or even more in his account.For crying out loud Buhari should let this man be, or did Buhari expect Onnoghen to be a failure like himself whose cows refused to increase from the time he ruled Nigeria as a military president till now.

why not declare all his account if he's not corrupt, come to think of it yourself ,can you forget an account you hv thousands of naira in not to talk of an account with billions, it really sound absurd
