Having a male child used to be the priority of every man in the
small and successful ILUTEDO village where I grew up. Every
man wished to have a male child,if not all his children at least a
male child. Each male child are taken with high level of respect
and dignity.
The eagerness of an expectant mother and father used to be very
high with the expectations of a male child.
A man would be in fear till his expectant wife is being delivered
of a baby. The anxiousness to check whether she had a male or
female child was always present.
But amidst all these, a lot of sadden incidents occurred. My
Mum once told me that the head of the village almost
committed suicide once when he discovered that his precious
wife was delivered of a bouncing baby girl again,the seventh
born.
Young girls were treated as an outcast in respect of the male
children. They were taken advantage of irrespective of their
status. No education, no learning,no vocational training.
Meanwhile the male children got all these.
My father was the village youth leader. The same pressure was
on my mother. Being the head of all youths in the village,my
father was given so much respects. He was accorded with so
much regards. Meanwhile I have a female elder one. And my
Mum was an expectant mother. She had all her hopes,spirits up
in the airs.
She had all her spirits high placed on her soul. She told me
once she discovered I was going to be a female child,the first
thought which came across her mind was to go to the stream
and jump into it. But she had the going back spirit which kept
stopping her.
