What controversies ? PHP is free open source unlike coldfusion for example. And try finding a shared server to host your coldfusion application. Whatever the advantages of CF would chose PHP over it anyday

i can use coldfusion to a limited extent. but, i am yet to find a client that specifically requests for coldfusion, most people are interested in getting their jobs done. I am not aware of any competition between the two, in the earlier days of when it was just perl, asp, jsp and coldfusion, long before the dayz of php and asp.net, coldfusion get mouth then, but now, with php et al, i even thought coldfusion has died. lol.
