Nigerian Government Approves N91billion For Grazing Reserves by Nobody: 3:43pm On Jan 31, 2019
The Nigerian government has initiated a 10-year National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) as part of efforts to address clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

The plan, according to government, is expected to gulp about N91billion in investments, while a profit of N2trillion is expected over the 10-year period.

The first phase of the plan will take care of grazing reserves in each of the seven pilot states of Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Zamfara which have been affected by herdsmen/farmers clashes, with four ranches (small, intermediate, medium and large) in each grazing reserve.

According to the plan as reported by Daily Trust newspaper, ranchers and rearers will be encouraged to bring their cattle to a fattening site wherein the cattle will be fed so as to boost average weight from 200-250 kg to 450-500kg.

If done, livestock farmers are expected to recoup N350,000 per cow at the selling rate of N900 per kilogramme.

According to the plan, “funding would be provided to cover the cost of fattening. Once cattle are enrolled in the programme, the asset owner will sign an agreement with the lender to allow for all cattle to be sold at specified weight range.

“Upon sale, lender deducts the cost of fattening from realized value, and cattle owner keeps the remainder of profit, minimizing risk and upfront investment.

So cows are now more important than millions of Nigerian university students who are still at home even though ASUU demanded for 50billion but they rather give 90billion to cows

Another problem now is the price of beef which is expected to double if their agenda should succeed. A win win for this government and the winners of the land grabbing war.

See ur sense of reasoning abeg... So becos ASUU is recurrent it's of less importance to helping herdmen raise their cows? Like seriously? So cow rearing is a far beta investment than Education? Wonderful

A business run by Who? So it is okay for d Govt to spend billions feeding cows owned by private individuals Abi?? First things first I thought dey claimed herdmens involved in clashed were aliens?

Ibo traders already have all the assistance they need. The market stalls and shops that litter the north were not but by them but by the state and local governments and leased to them for rent. The FG will build cattle ranches all over the north and rent them out to herdsmen too

Was there any igbo state mentioned in the report? They can't even implement it in Benue and Taraba they mentioned let alone igboland.

Nice try!

This is a targeted intervention at Fulani herdsmen and their herding business, and is quite different from the example you cited in that the stalls and shops built in the north are for everyone to rent (not built specifically built for 'Ibos'), and are leased out at the ongoing market rate for shops in the area....no subsidised rates!

Besides, the example you gave was relating to state and local govt's, and i'm sure you can find similar instances in the south-east as well!

The issue we're discussing here has to do with the federal gov't spending our national commonwealth to aid one ethnic group to further a business that's unique to them! We'd be talking of fairness if the same federal gov't rendered a similar level of support to a business unique to 'Ibos' (say, spare-parts business for instance smiley ), barring which we'd equally be happy if said funds were put into upgrading Onitsha main market to world class status!

Actually it's the same thing. The FG owns the land on which these proposed ranches are to be built, same as those stalls the ibis rent from the state and LG. The FG has the right to do whatsoever it pleases on its land without recourse to any wailer opinion. If ibos so wish, they can join the cattle rearing business cos I'm sure the FG will rent out the reserves to them too.
