Accident At Police Checkpoint Again by Ade0001(m): 3:15pm On Aug 19, 2010
Barely a week after the accident caused by a police checkpoint in which 30 people reportedly lost their lives in Lagos State, SouthWest Nigeria, a police check point has caused another accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Berger bridge bus stop.
P.M.NEWS learnt that the accident occurred this morning when a truck with registration number XK 6351 SP was stopped by policemen at a checkpoint.

But when the driver was about to stop, he lost control and crushed a Mercedes Benz car with registration number AM 204 KTU and a  Police Gateway Response Squad vehicle with registration number FP 5385 OG.

According to report, the Benz car was towed from Ibafo last week to the police checkpoint for repairs.

Some of the residents of the area, who spoke to P.M.NEWS condemned the action of the policemen who they alleged harass both motorists and passengers on the expressway  to extort money from them.

It was also gathered that two policemen narrowly escaped death last week at the same checkpoint when a truck lost control and ran into their shed.

As at press time, the truck, Mercedes Benz car and the police vehicle were still at the scene of the accident.

Looking forward to listening to the excuse or alibi that the police hierarchy will put forward on this. Hope they won't request for video evidence, smiley

I know Nigeria police have problems, but dont you guys think it is about time something is also done to confirm that these trucks plying Nigeria roads are roadworthy, especially the ones hauling Petroleum products?

You're right! It's not only the state of the trucks, most of the drivers are also reckless and drive at frightening speed even when they are within built up areas and whether they are laden with load or not. Again, many of the drivers are ill-trained and too young to have the experience for that kind of vehicle.

Aren't you surprised that these days trucks no longer keep to the right lane except when overtaking? Almost everywhere, you see them struggling for right of way on the speed (left) lane and staying there even when the right lane is free.  Take a short trip from Lagos to Ibadan and you'd be amazed by the number of upturned trucks, no thanks to the recklessness of the drivers in many of the cases.

Long ago, police used to paste "off road" on vehicles that are no longer road worthy and such vehicles would never be seen on the roads again. These days all manners of vehicles are seen on our roads, vehicles that even the original manufacturers would marvel at what Nigerians have turned them to. In such situations, one would see a vehicle with a Toyota door, Nissan bonnet, Mitsubishi boot and Peugeot grille with Ford engine.

Even drivers whose trucks are relatively new appear not be so used to the new trucks as such new trucks now come with power steering and other innovations. Our people are used to driving Mercedez Benz 911 lorries where it takes two able-bodied men to turn its manual steering.

Nigeria is the grave yard of any product.

Used cars
Used shoes
Used bra and panties
Used computer systems
everything used by other countries before dumping them in Nigeria their final grave!
