The rooster’s early morning crow in response
to the change in the light had forced his eyes
open but it was the loud vibration on his
phone that pulled him out of bed.
“Nnamdi are you still sleeping, wake up!
Onitsha is boiling,” the voice on the phone had
said as she hurriedly hung up amid gunshots
in the background.
Obviously thunderstruck, the sight of no water
to either brush his teeth or have a quick
shower didn’t stop Nnamdi from taking the
next bus from Lagos to Onitsha, as attempts
to get his wife back on the phone proved
abortive.
The event which had occurred in the early
hours of the day was about to send shivers
down his spine.
“I got to my town, Nkpor, to meet my wife and
children safe but in a melancholic state. They
narrated to me how they were forcefully woken
by unceasing gun shots. At that point, they
had no idea of what was going on.
“It was much later in the day, people told us
that army killed many of our people who had
assembled at a church in remembrance of
Biafra day.
“Honestly speaking, no army or police have
the licence to kill unarmed civilians, when
they can arrest them and bring them to
justice. It is not only unlawful but also
immoral. I had to send my wife and my two
sons to stay with my elder sister in Enugu.
They will be there till I can make provision for
them to join me in Lagos,” Nnamdi, a
businessman in the Mushin area of Lagos, told
NAIJ.com.
Biafra day turns bloody
In the commercial city of Onitsha, sources say
that scores of people were killed, while many
others were arrested.
The incident, according to eyewitnesses,
started at about 3am on Monday, May 30,
when security forces entered the premises of
St. Edmund’s Catholic Church, Nkpor Agu,
near Onitsha, and allegedly opened fire on
worshippers, accusing them of being members
of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They
killed five and wounded 10.
Pro-Biafra agitators
The sources further stated that at 8am the
security forces, who were patrolling all areas
of Onitsha, Nkpor, Ogidi and the environs,
allegedly swooped on another batch of
suspected IPOB members, killing about 20 and
wounding scores of others.
At about 11am, the patrol allegedly killed
another 15 people, thus bringing the total
number of dead to about 40, with many more
wounded.
All of this happened when pro-Biafra agitators
turned out across the south-east states in
marches to commemorate the 49th
anniversary of the declaration of the defunct
Biafra Republic by the late warlord, Dim
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
Lt. Col. Ojukwu declared the former Eastern
Region the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967,
following the failure of peace talks between the
region and Nigeria to resolve the 1966 post-
independence political crisis that engulfed the
nation.
The Biafra Day celebrations turned sour as the
pro-Biafra agitators came up against security
forces, leading to stampedes, and the deaths
and arrests of many members of the agitating
groups.
The Biafra protests turned violent on Monday,
May 30 after confrontations between the
protesters and security agencies
Eyewitness said that the crowds were unarmed
and that many more people were killed than
the security agencies are ready to admit.
The army claimed that in killing the pro-Biafra
activists and wounding several others, its
troops merely followed the extant rules of
engagement in resorting to self-defence to
protect the lives and property of peace-loving
Nigerians.
A statement by Colonel H.A. Gambo, the
army’s deputy public relations officer, said
soldiers actions were borne out of the need to
prevent reinforcement by the pro-Biafran
members, apparently surging ahead from the
far side of the strategic Niger Bridge in
Onitsha.
It said five members of MASSOB/IPOB were
killed, eight wounded, and nine arrested as
both Igbo Biafra groups launched a combined
attack on the peace-loving populace and on
security agencies.


The statement read: “The attention of the
general public is, hereby, drawn to the
unwarranted attack launched by combined
members of Movement for Actualization of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), and the
Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) against
the peace-loving populace as well as security
agencies.
“This attack was purported to have been
orchestrated to mar the first anniversary of the
present democratic government as part of the
activities earmarked to celebrate the 49th
anniversary of Biafra.
“Due to the widespread panic, tension and
apprehension that generated from the activities
of MASSOB and IPOB members, security
agencies which comprised detachments of the
Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police, Department of
State Service, National Drug Law Enforcement
Agency, NDLEA, were compelled to intervene,
in consonance with constitutional provisions of
aid to civil authority where and when such
occasion demands.
“The over-arching imperative to ensure a reign
of peace, security and stability in this
circumstance was most starring.
“However, the MASSOB/IPOB members, who
had earlier assembled at a school location on
Ataa Road, near Saint Edmund’s Catholic
Parish, Maryland, Nkpor-Agu in Anambra State
resorted to fierce attack against the
intervening security agencies that were
carrying out their legitimate mandate.
“The nature of this attack involved brazen
employment of various types of fire arms and
all sorts of crude weapons, volatile cocktail
such as acid and dynamites.
“Instructively, troops of 82 Division Nigerian
Army, as the lead agency of the security
agencies, had to invoke the extant Rules of
Engagement (ROE) to resort to self-defence,
protection of the strategic Niger Bridge,
prevent re-enforcement of the pro-Biafran
members apparently surging ahead from the
far side of the Niger Bridge at Onitsha.”
The Nigerian government is yet to investigate
the extrajudicial killings.
A history of extrajudicial killings and
harassments in the south-east
Statistics by the South-East Based Coalition of
Human Rights Organizations (SBCHROs) has
shown that about 80 members of the
Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their
supporters have been killed by Nigerian
security operatives nominally under the
control of the Nigerian government between
August 30, 2015, and February 9, 2016.
The most notable incidents were the protests
that took place in Onitsha on December 2,
2015, in which 11 people reportedly lost their
lives; two policemen and nine activists; and
in Aba on February 9, 2016, where six IPOB
members were allegedly killed by Nigerian
security forces and about 20 others arrested.
IPOB also claimed that Nigerian soldiers
secretly killed and burned the corpses of
Biafran activists in a separate incident in Aba.
In addition to the killings, some media reports
allege that members of the Igbo ethnic group
have been subjected to abuse and harassment
by Nigerian security operatives.
One such incident allegedly occurred on
December 23, 2015, as many Igbos embarked
on trips to the south-east, returning home for
Christmas celebrations from the western part
of the country. It was reported that many were
detained and molested on the Onitsha Niger
River Bridge for several hours by soldiers
conducting stop and search operations. The
resulting gridlock lasted for up to twelve hours
with many commuters spending the night at
both ends of the bridge.
However, the Nigerian military and federal
government emphatically denied the claims of
abuse.


Global reactions
The extrajudicial killings in the south-east
have brought global reactions and Amnesty
International looks to be leading the pack.
A report by Amnesty accused the Nigerian
military of killing at least 17 unarmed pro-
Biafra agitators in the city of Onitsha prior to a
march on May 30 commemorating the 49th
anniversary of the initial secession of Biafra.
According to the report, evidence gathered
from eyewitnesses, morgues and hospitals
confirms that between May 29-30, the Nigerian
military opened fire on IPOB supporters and
bystanders at three locations in the town.
“Opening fire on peaceful IPOB supporters and
bystanders who clearly posed no threat to
anyone is an outrageous use of unnecessary
and excessive force and resulted in multiple
deaths and injuries. In one incident one
person was shot dead after the authorities
burst in on them while they slept,” said M.K.
Ibrahim, the country director of Amnesty
International Nigeria.
He added: “These shootings, some of which
may amount to extrajudicial executions, must
be urgently and independently investigated
and anyone suspected of criminal
responsibility must be brought to justice.
“The exact number of deaths is unknown,
partly due to the fact that the Nigerian army
took away corpses and the injured.
“But after visits to hospitals and morgues, the
organization has confirmed – based on this
initial investigation – that at least 17 people
were killed and nearly 50 injured. The real
number is likely to be higher.
“Some of the dead and injured IPOB
supporters seen by an Amnesty International
researcher were shot in the back, an indication
that they were fleeing the scene when they
were shot.”
The Senate has also asked all the states in the
south-east geo-political zone to investigate
the causes of these deaths.

The Senate’s resolution came on the heels of
the adoption of a request by Deputy Senate
President Ike Ekweremadu, which drew the
attention of the senators to the killings.
Ekweremadu also observed that the killing of
young men and women was disastrous for the
future of the country, stressing that the youths
represented the future of the nation.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has also condemned
the shooting of the supporters of pro-Biafra
groups and called for a judicial investigation.
What Nigerian constitution says about human
rights and peaceful protest
The provision in section 40 of the constitution
is clear and unambiguous, and is formulated
and designed to confer on every person the
right to freedom of assembly and association.
Section 40 of the Nigerian constitution states:
“Every person shall be entitled to assemble
freely and associate with other persons, and in
particular he may form or belong to any
political party, trade union or any other
association for the protection of his interests.
The violation of section 40 can only be done
according to the procedure permitted by law
under section 45 of the constitution, in which
case there must be a state of emergency
properly declared before these rights can be
violated.
If the constitution which must be adhered to
states that every citizen has a right to peaceful
protest, why has the south-east continued to
bleed?
And how can the crisis in the south-east be
stopped before the zone becomes a huge
cemetery.
The solution
The only medication to stop the bleeding in
the south-east is the security agents’ and the
agitators’ ability to sheathe their swords.
The agitators should engage their
representatives at the National Assembly with
their grievances against the nation.
The government for its part, should talk with
the agitating groups with a view to addressing
their grievances, and all those found to have
perpetrated the killings in Onitsha should be
prosecuted and punished.
Furthermore, President Muhammadu Buhari
should instruct the security agencies not to
apply force against the agitators. It has not
stopped the agitation so far, and is not likely
to do so in the future.
Nnamdi Kanu, the acclaimed leader of IPOB, is
still in detention
If the government is willing to talk with
militant groups in the south-south, why not do
the same with pro-Biafra agitators in the
south-east, Nigerians are asking?
