Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by batu: 10:03am On Apr 22, 2007
Dear All,
This is what happens when cerebrally lazy peoples steal a lot of money; they don't even know how to lie and eventually confess without knowing. On CNN's Inside Africa yesterday (titled Nigeria's Volatile Democracy), Atiku was asked to comment on his indictment for corruption; listen to his response or defence, quoted word for word, as a self-titled leading oppositon condidate:

"We established two anti-corruption agencies, the ICPC and the EFCC; unfortunately the EFCC has been turned to a machinery to harrass the opponents of the government. If corruption is done by the friends of the government, they cover it up; but if corruption is done by the opposition, they hurriedly jump on it."

Can you believe this! A slip of tongue or rather a confession. From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. They showed his 5million dollar house in Abuja, 3million dollar house in Yola and another worth more than 3million dollars in high-brow area of Washington said to 'belong' to his wife Jennifer Atiku-Abubakar (a recent PhD student!) among many others, for a man who was a civil servant until mid nineties (i.e. custom officer). It is only in Nigeria that a thief proves his innocence by admitting to being corrupt, but that he is not the only one hence he is not guilty. Unfortunately, the thief who is caught is a thief; as for the others, their own time too will come; but Atiku's time is now. Barawo banza!!!

Those who missed the programme can probably go to Inside Africa's page on CNN.com and download the recent edition titiled "Nigeria: Volatile Democracy."
Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by Jakumo(m): 10:39am On Apr 22, 2007
Atiku seems quite proud of the wealth he has amassed through graft, contract kickbacks and embezzlement, going by the Freudian slip he made on that 60 minutes program.

The main point Atiku labored to establish in that interview is that all Nigerian government officials are expected to steal in direct proportion to their access to state funds, but that the umpire of the looting orgy should at least be impartial in an "honor among thieves" kind of way.

@batu,
dont you understand engish?

He used the word 'IF'
Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by Seun(m): 10:54am On Apr 22, 2007
"If" the opponents of president Obasanjo are not corrupt, then his selectivity doesn't affect them.

It's like saying, "if Seun sees a pornographic picture posted by me, he deletes it". How did you get to know this?

Babasin, can you see the logical wisdom in Seun's analogy or you are still busy reading English upside down?

Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by alanbolo(m): 5:35pm On Apr 23, 2007
thx batu,  while we're not condoling thuggery or stealing,  those who are publicly indicted for stealing should not be allowed to hold any public post.  Atiku can not and will not rule 9ja. Most of the time we do turn blind eye to the truth.

While the present govt. may not be the best we clamour 4, do we realize the profileration of information technology "GSM and Internet" gained the support of the govt through policies and availabilities of machineries to facilitate these trends.

As much as we have access to govt info bits-by-bits, it'll be difficult to continue stealing.

Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by debosky(m): 5:56pm On Apr 23, 2007
technically he could not have been referring to himself, because the so called 'corruption' he is accused of carrying out (PTDF drama) happened when he was part and parcel of the PDP, and still in Obj's good books. In fact since he went into the 'opposition' (after the third term imbroglio) he was systematically stripped of all duties and authority in the govt, essentially becoming a ceremonial figure - VP in name only. hence his access to funds, even official vehicles were cut off, so he could not have engaged in 'corruption' (at least not in govt circles) while he was in the opposition.

considering the above assertion, he has NOT implicated himself, the only thing he highlighted was the present govt's selective prosecution of corruption cases, in line with the perceived 'friendliness' to the current govt (read OBJ) or otherwise.

I await logical rebuttals
Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by sisimose(f): 5:58pm On Apr 23, 2007

Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by sisimose(f): 6:05pm On Apr 23, 2007
well sorry to tell you what you propose as logic up there is far from it. i am simply injecting some humour to cheer myself up, a i can rememeber u gave me a chill pill right? and my comment is not suggestive in anyway too, i meant torture
i still disagree, Atiku is not as sophisticated or smart as you may think. Batu's post is clear and this seem like alot of beating around the bush all in the name of logic. wink the staement he made was clear no ifs no buts about it smiley wink
Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by debosky(m): 6:12pm On Apr 23, 2007
I didn't say there were any ifs or buts about it, but the fact is that when you are a member of the ruling party, you can hardly be regarded as being in the 'opposition' which is what he stated. That cannot in anyway be construed as a self incriminating statement, since his 'corrupt' actions predate his opposition status.
Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by sisimose(f): 6:15pm On Apr 23, 2007

It is a pity that our system in this country encourages stealing, because it lacks proper accountability and in the end we will all discuss these issues and nothing will be done about them. Almost every body in government is there because of their personal gains, I do not see any difference in OBJ AND ATIKU. I can give you examples:
a.  TRANSCUP( grin)
b.  Arik AIR
c.  Private university
d.  NITEL's bid was already won by ORASCOM Telecoms before transcorp came in.
e. Why are we not saying anything about those allegation Atiku made agaist OBJ

I THINK THESE OFFICES SHOULD BE MADE UNATTRACTIVE JUST LIKE THE SALARIES THEY PAY OUR LECTURES,HOW  COULD SOMEONE KILL HIS OPPONENT IF HE TRUELY WANT TO SERVE THE PEOPLE. cry

Re: Atiku Abubakar's "Confession" On CNN 'Inside Africa'!!! by dayokanu(m): 8:53pm On Apr 23, 2007
OBJ should be one of the most corrupt president Nigeria has ever had. His regime made the most money and left behind darkness, bad roads, insecurity, and the freeest and fairest erection in Nigeria's history, ATK is corrupt but no one can rival OBJ's corruption. What was OBJ's worth as at 1999 compare it to now and see the percentage increase.
Obj is just using the machinery of the state to label anybody corrupt including Mimiko that EFCC later absolved of all blame.

OBJ might be going but he is leaving his puppet behind to cover his smelling tracks
