I once said that I will never allow anyone I know to study 'Mass Communication' as a Degree. A roudy degree. They have the highest number of unemployable graduates in Nigeria.
Nothing pisses a recruiter than seeing a Mass Communication Degree on a Resume. Believe me. A recruiter once told me in confidence that he had preferred a Public Administrator to a Mass Communicator. No offence.

two things, either you are lying and you never met such a "recruiter" or the so called recruiter is ignorant and should be relieved of his or her duties, mass communication is a very robust course with lots of abilities infused in it's graduates, its only those who do not know their onion that will not deliver and will remain unemployed. Listen to yourself compare learning how to be a civil servant(public administration) to studying advertising, public relations, journalism, broadcasting,book publishing...did you even read the article at all?

This is a welcome development to be honest. As a mass comm graduate, i have developed an interest in Development Communication but this was just a third abi final year course back in the day. The different sides to mass communication this movement is aiming to promote individually are offered as singular courses in most private and foreign schools. This umbrella study of communication is currently why mass comm as a body is not a professional course. But with the separation of disciplines, each discipline can become a professional body. I hope this is seen to a successful end and i pray the young ones appreciate this development.

They should also explore opening up a graduate school for these courses so that past gradustes can have an option of upgrading their certificates by way of specialization. I would definitely love to further study development communication studies.

Way to go!!!�

Nice development. Though, some universities like KWASU spreads the course out and ensures students get to specialize at 300 level. Though only three specialization are available: Public Relations and Advertising, Broadcasting and Book Publishing (not yet effective).

Plus, it'll ease-off popular stereotypes surrounding Mass Communication students and graduates.

Nice! I developed a strong interest for Mass Communication after taking the introductory course: "Development Communication". Even my final year project was on development communication.
Pity that there was no specialization for it then, and I had to settle for Public Relations and Advertising, though I like it too.

That's what you should have said. The banking attached to it is irrelevant, it should have been Finance. That's why it's called finance in abroad and even unilag in Nigeria. But, mind you those guys are studying two different course-Banking and finance. Banking should be removed and leave finance just as oversea countries.

It is advantageous for students seeking admission at least the pressure on one department would reduce. What those professors did was to introduce speciality whereby graduate will be grounded in one aspect. Instead of mass communication been seen in faculty of art or social sciences, they can have their own faculty called faculty of communication
