A United Nations-appointed independent rights expert, Diego Garcia-Sayán on Monday warned that dismissal of Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Walter Onnoghen, and “threats, pressures and interferences” made against the lawyers defending him, may constitute a grave attack on judicial independence from the State.

Garcia-Sayán, who is the independent UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, made these comments in a statement released ahead of Saturday’s general elections in Nigeria.

Speaking on the decision to suspend Onnoghen on January 25 suspension of Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, Garcia-Sayán said; “International human rights standards provide that judges may be dismissed only on serious grounds of misconduct or incompetence.

Belgore Denies N450m Money Laundering Allegation

Dele Belgore (SAN), the Kwara State campaign Coordinator for former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, debunked the allegation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he laundered the sum of N450m in 2015.

Belgore was prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly benefiting N450m alongside a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, on a 9-count amended charge.

However, while testifying in his own defence on Monday, Belgore admitted being invited by the bank manager on March 26, 2015, to take delivery of the N450m cash, but he said he ended up leaving the bank without the money.

The union made this known in a statement jointly signed by its Secretary-General, Comrade Ahmed Usman and its Public Relation Officer, Comrade Reuben Musa.
