Nigeria Re-Elected UN Peacekeeping Committee Chair by prof2007: 11:12pm On Mar 07, 2020
Nigeria has been re-elected to chair the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, known to be “UN most strategic committee” on the record 48th time. According to a statement on Friday by Amb. Samson Itegboje, the Charge d’Affaires and Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, Nigeria re-emerged the committee’s Chair by election.

Itegboje, the Nigerian representative was elected Chair of the committee said to be C-34 by acclamation at the UN Headquarters in New York at the opening of the 2020 Session. Canada was also re-elected as Vice-Chair, while Argentina, Poland Japan and Egypt were elected as Bureau members.

Itegboje said, “Nigeria has chaired the special committee on peacekeeping operations from 1972 till date and was always re-elected to continue to lead the most critical committee of the UN. The committee is the only UN committee mandated to review comprehensively the whole question of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in all its aspects.

“It also makes recommendations on enhancing UN peacekeeping operations across the world about pressing issues facing more than 100,000 military, police and civilian personnel from 125 countries presently serving in 14 operations. Nigeria is among the world’s 15th largest troops contributor to UN Peacekeeping operations and the eighth in Africa, according to data from the UN Peacekeeping Department.”

Itegboje thanked the members for the confidence being reposed on him and Nigeria while promising to ensure that the Committee would deliver its mandate.

The committee consists of 147 Member States involved in peacekeeping missions and observing members such as the International Criminal Police Organisation.

48 straight f***ng years, yet, we can neither eradicate nor reach a truce with Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen insurgency.

We're always quick to send out our troops on peacekeeping mission(s) but we can't even handle our own case. Nawa ooooo!

Nigeria actually has one of, if not the best military in Africa and we are world renowned for our exploits especially in peacekeeping (Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur etc.) for decades, which is why some of us are increasingly suspicious of the BH insurgency which has proven unusually problematic for our usually gallant forces.

May God bless our Armed Forces and guide them to defeat our enemies once and for all. Congratulations.

To me this really send some signal, how can Nigeria succeed in chairing such a committee since 1972 and cannot even have peace since 2012.l? My thought is that if Buhari should become president it will be eradicated less did I know it just the Beginning. May God restore peace in Nigeria again, even if it require that Nigeria should break so be it
