Is it flag Bearer or standard bearer?

We all know that a standard actually means a flag, but then, why is it wrong for someone to use the word 'flag-bearer' to refer to the leader of a political party?

Let's get down to brass tacks�

Who is a flag bearer?
one who carries a flag, especially at a ceremony
Synonyms: flag carrier, standard-bearer

Meaning 2: One who openly promotes an idea or value and becomes symbolic for it. E.g These ladies are flag bearers for feminism.

Who is a standardbearer?
A person who carries a flag or banner (a standard).
E.g The standard-bearer in battle is in the center of the front line so the following troops know where to go; unfortunately, it also shows the enemy where to shoot.

(figuratively) A standard bearer is a person who visibly leads.
E.g He became the standard-bearer for their cause because of his celebrity.

In as much as standard bearer and flagbearer mean a flag carrier in one context, it is only standard bearer that is the expression used to figuratively denote the leader of a group, organisation or a party.
