He's running a government of an inclusive North.. No offense but, how can the North develop this country when an Average Northerner don't value education? Besides, the North is not even known for global achievement in the diaspora like the South. We need incredible technocrats and not career Northern politician. Sigh

Exactly! That would invariably bring about more involvement of youths in running affairs of the country. But no, they'd rather appoint people that are best left in the Stone Age.

You get problem. People who knows more than you are telling you what you must do to improve, you blabbing here. with Brexit, Britain can never be the headquarter of poverty.
You better go back to school.

No FT reporter from Wales know Nigeria better than an educated Nigerian who actually live in Nigeria.

Your comment flows from that age old fallacy that Western is better. FT is pushing an agenda just as we now know that all Western media push agendas.

The Buhari administration that has no economic agenda successfully:
pulled us out of a recession
now have 2% quarterly growth
raised foreign reserve from $15b to over $40b,
increased capital expenditure above previous figures
increased our agricultural output to record highs

All of these was done with stagnant oil prices.

Yet, as far FT can see, their warped analyses is to compare Buhari's 4 years to achievements in Rwanda and Ethiopia which are results of actions being taken by those countries from more than 10 years back. A period when the PDP administration was busy kleptoing Nigeria to oblivion.

And talking about Rwanda and Ethiopia. Hope you guys know that despite all the hoopla about them, the economies are not exactly growing as assumed. The success attributed to them thus far is due their renewed ability to crush graft and channel their resources appropriately. All of which Buhari is already doing and which achievements will manifest even more openly in a shirt while.

So, please, tell FT that I said they don't know better than me. I am educated, have a career, live in Nigeria and voted for Buhari because of the good economic direction I perceive he is taking the country!

Shey you know that the technocrats you were mentioning, Buhari's economic team (until the recent departure of Kemi) was in fact entirely composed of southerners.

Now let's see how that sits with your bigoted theory.

You are educated yet you don't know when an economy is a failure You don't know when a govt lacks direction.
If you were in Nigeria b4 2015, you would have known Nigeria was not the world HQ of extreme poverty. and if you have been in Nigeria 2015 till now, you would have known the entire nation is impoverished and citizens crying of hunger and suffering. And that's as a result of government's lack of direction. You can blame it on the previous government as the current government has been/is still doing.
Government that blames its predecessor as APC does is a failed government.
And because you have a career and your salary did not stop does not mean millions of Nigerians did not loose jobs.
Lots of investors pulled out of Nigeria 2015 because an analogue president was coming in.

RESTRUCTURING OUR MINDS

When the stock market lost N89bn after Buhari's re-election, many Nigerians were quick to break the news. Today, the stock market has gain N112bn, there is no breaking news.

Some few months ago, the international community reported that Nigeria has become the poverty headquarter of the world. In excitement, many Nigerians were quick and eager to break the news. This same international community have said the 2019 elections are the most credible and democratic and many Nigerians are not happy and have rejected the commendation.

The restructuring we preach must start from our minds. Why will you be happy when something bad happens in your country? Why do you reject or despise any good thing about your country?

There is a cold war between Pakistan and India but you will never see citizens of these countries breaking news of their dead soldiers. But if India will make a breakthrough in Cancer treatment today, their media space will be saturated with the good news.

In the last one week, Nigeria has made positive news: we are now the highest rice producer in Africa, the mining sector has recorded 500% increase in revenue, the volume of export have increased by 39%... These are cheering news that have gone almost unnoticed.

Today, the news we like breaking are: people killed here, people killed there. Rest in peace Mr. A, Nigeria has gone down 12 places on anti-corruption index... Is this the only News we hear about Nigeria? We must start restructuring our minds on what we want of Nigeria.

The Financial Times of London says President Muhammadu Buhari has been running a government that lacks a clear direction in the last four years.

The respected newspaper therefore called on the President to see his re-election as an opportunity to do the right thing.

The Financial Times said this in its editorial which has been read and shared thousands of times around the world.

It said there was no clear economic policy like that of Rwanda and Ethiopia.

It read in part, “With his renewed mandate, it is now Mr Buhari’s task to rebuild faith by running a dynamic and successful administration and by building the institutions that can lay firmer foundations than in his previous term.

“The omens from his first four years in office are not good. During that time, the former military leader ran a lacklustre administration with no obvious sense of direction. There was no coherent economic strategy of the sort being attempted by the likes of Ethiopia, Rwanda or west African neighbours Ghana and Senegal to produce the rapid growth needed to haul tens of millions of people out of poverty. It is an indictment of its leadership — both military and democratic — that the continent’s biggest oil producer should have more people living in absolute poverty than any other country in the world.”

FT advised the President to appoint more technocrats in his second term who can help turn things around.

The newspaper said the anti-corruption war must be more holistic and less selective.

FT added, “Mr Buhari’s priority this time must be to set out a coherent agenda, implemented by technocrats rather than ideologues, to turn things around. Nigeria desperately needs to create a level playing field for business in which access to foreign currency, permits, and other requirements is both predictable and rational.

“His much-vaunted crackdown on corruption must go beyond taking action against a few minor officials. Some big scalps would help. More important still is to implement systematic changes — whether by reforming institutions, using technology or by removing arbitrage opportunities — to create a more transparent environment. People should prosper in Nigeria based on what they know and how much value and employment they can create, not by their connections.”

He should start with Obasanjo. The idea that Obasanjo is untouchable should be erased by Buhari.

Fighting against corruption in a country where someone is deemed untouchable is like fighting corruption in vain.

No one is above the law. In a country with powerful laws, there are no untouchables.

As for the actual substance of the FT article, which is actually to be found here, it is only stating what I, grandstar and a few other people have been saying on Nairaland for the last 4 years: Buhari's ignorance of economics and unwillingness to heed expert advice on the subject has left the Nigerian economy rudderless and underperforming. As for Buhari's "anti corruption" initiatives, they stand no chance of making any lasting impact as long as they are widely perceived to be partisan attacks, and as long as they fail to address the underlying issues which incentivize corruption in the first place, e.g. protectionism, a hugely bloated civil service, over-regulation, too many public sector parastatals, etc. This is a point I've been stressing for years now, and the FT is hardly being going out on a limb by saying as much.

Buhari's simple-minded policies are well placed to appeal to the large numbers of equally simple-minded, poorly educated people who voted for him, but their only lasting impact in the long-run will have been to depress the Nigerian economy's growth rate below its maximum for nearly a decade. In terms of opportunity-costs, we are talking hundreds of billions of US$ forgone because a sick 78-year old man refuses to accept that he isn't the best person to be setting exchange rates or import policies.

Wrong.
Buhari has and is implementing Socialist policies as opposed to Capitalist free market policies which the west wants him to implement, those dregs of the society belongs to the society too and are in the majority, policies that will ensure they are lifted out of poverty and deprivation are bad news to the likes of FT.
