You just dropped your phone in the toilet or a pool of water, DON’T panic. GRAB IT as quick as you can because the longer it’s in the liquid, the greater the likelihood damage will be. Once you get a hold of your phone make sure you turn it off by removing the battery and if your phone has a non-removable battery power it off by pressing the power button.

Before we get to the next step these are some of the things you shouldn’t do after your phone drops in water;

Don’t try to charge it

Don’t turn it on
Don’t use a blower or try to blow it the water droplets might spread to other parts of your phone
Don’t shake your phone
Right after switching off your phone remove your sim card and memory card, you can wipe it using a dry piece of cloth but the best method is to bury your phone in a sack of dry rice. The rice absorbs away the moisture trapped inside your phone, ensuring that it is completely dry inside and out.

You can also fill a plastic baggy with silica packets (those little packets that you find in shoe boxes) and drop your phone in into it. Silica is a desiccant that sucks up water moisture, so it’s perfect for drying a wet smartphone. Whether you choose the rice method or the silica method, you’ll have to leave your phone in the bowl or bag for about 3 days to make sure that all of the moisture has been removed.

After 2 – 3 days you can turn on your phone and if it turns on you are good to go. If your gadget doesn’t go on you can charge it and if its still not responding you can check in a mobile repair shop. If your smartphone has turned on and it is running as it should, you should still keep a close eye on it for the next few days, to see if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

If you want to protect your phone from water damage in future, you can also purchase a waterproof phone case.
