Brutal Truth About Nigerians by Nobody: 12:20pm On Mar 14, 2019
I came across this article on Quora by Victor Dirikebamor that sums up Nigeria and Nigerians. It discussed our problems in the country and how we all are responsible for it. I thought it's worth sharing.

The richest people in Africa are in Nigeria and they are mostly politicians.

Nigeria is the richest and poorest country in Africa. Basically, no Nigerian is poor, many of us simply tolerate too much waste in almost every aspect of our life, the apparent ones being money and food.

Don't call any Nigeria you come across a scammer. We have a population of almost 200 million people , if you got scammed by one Nigerian it doesn't mean everyone in that country is a scammer, it pains us to the marrow when you call every Nigerian you come across a scammer.

The poor lack almost every basic amenities you can think of in Nigeria. No clean drinking water, many rural health care system is non functional and the ones in the cities are congested. Epileptic power supply, bad roads, poor education mostly due to poor funding etc.

Nigerians lack good maintenance culture towards public property, you may praise and admire a brand new sports stadium or a magnificent government building but in two or three years time it would become an eye -sore, that it won't even draw your attention to look at it.

Many Nigerians vote not because a particular politician is worth voting for, we vote mostly because he or she is a relative or a tribes man or woman or a party member. Hence our country has refused to grow because we don't vote leaders who have the credibility to move Nigeria and Nigerians to a better standard in everything we lack today.

Nigerians are so divided here in Nigeria but we automatically love each other and live as one in a foreign land. The president will ask you; "What tribe are you from then he will in turn ask you what state?" The state Governor will ask you "What Local Government are you from?" The chairman of the local government will ask you "what community are you from?" The community leader will in turn ask you "What family are you from?"
This is one of the fundamental problem in Nigeria, there is too much division in this country. There is no much pride in been a Nigerian in another state. It's as if you're in a foreign land with lots of intimidation and restrictions from the locals. ‘One Nigeria’ is just a literary phrase not in reality. You can't even vote your favorite presidential candidate during an election from another state.

Many Nigerians are Jobless and are just idle, and they will do anything, yes anything just to bring bread to the dining table. Mind you, this idle youths are college graduates with Diploma and MBA’s, with no government or private institution to make use of their expertise.

Many Nigerian workers are either under employed or under payed.

We celebrate everything and look for more reasons to celebrate like weddings, burial, birthday, naming, securing admission, buying a house or car, etc. We party hard even with the only money we have with the hope that tomorrow will be better. Nigerians are very hopeful people hence we hardly commit suicide.

We brag about been the poorest in this country, don't come and tell us how poor you are in your country, chances are we have someone worse than your case just a few blocks away.

People are forced to be smart and resilient in Nigeria. In whatever you do, you have to beat thousands if not millions to stand out. You cannot be a lazy Nigerian except you want to die poor, and Nigerians almost always stand out internationally because if one can beat thousands here in Nigeria then the sky is your limit.

Football and music are the only things that can unite Nigerians, the later is even more promising in bringing about relative peace and patriotism.

We have good food here, this is a country of over 500 ethnic groups and they all have their delicacy, what ever type of food you want chances are it's a favorite food in a particular tribe or ethnic group here in Nigeria.

Despite all we face in Nigeria, on a darkest day, a typical Nigerian still believes that it will get better. You can see the ambers of hope even in the eyes of the children.

God bless Nigeria!
