Chinua Achebe, Phillip Emeagwali, Alexander Anumalu, etc are popular names we hear when we talk about Igbo intellectual achievers. Today however, I believe we have a new "first eleven" that can inspire the next generation of Igbo intellectuals: 1. Dr. Bennet Omalu, a neuropathologist who discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease in america's most lucrative sport, the NFL (american football). America quickly made him their citizen. he won a lifetime achievement award by the American Medical Association. his biography was played by Will Smith in the 2015 film "Concussion". 2. Prof. Samuel Achilefu, a biomedical engineer who invented a cancer seeing device blazed a trail in detecting cancer cells in real time and easily distinguishing them from healthy cells. this will go a long way in preventing the damage of healthy cells in treating the patients with chemotherapy or irradiation. he won the st. Louis award for invention and other notable awards. 3. Prof Kalu Ogbureke, A maxofacial surgeon was the first scientist of African descent to be awarded the King James IV professorship in 2016, a distinctive honor in Europe. His groundbreaking research on maxoficial anatomy and surgery has been reviewed and published all over the world. surgeries in this field owe much of their knowledge to him. 4. Chimamanda Adichie, a multiple award winning novelist and essayist. Her books are creatively written and enjoyable to all. Her speeches on feminism are thought provoking, especially for the black woman's emancipation from a male dominated world. feel free to add you cos there are more to recognize and celebrate. 5 Likes 1 Share |

superlightning:I have seen nothing spectacular about Adichie's speeches on feminism. Feminism is a concept for bemused women with low self esteem and ladies who are ignorant of their true identity as a woman. Women already have enormous power in the world but fail to recognise that that power lies in their gentility, comportment and can be effectively harnessed through their submissiveness to their man. |
