As the more educated folks run out of Nigeria, Expect more of this. The management is obviously rotten & the organisation is a ready tool in the hands of some politicians. But it's a huge source of revenue !! So sadly those who would have brought it down are just given shares.

And Op,After Lagos & Oyo,Ogun is next biko. They migrated en masse after Lagos banned motorcycles that year & it's been growing

nurtw is the official body that houses the agberos and touts we have in this country. The unkempt appearance, violent and crude character seems to flow in all of their veins. To even think they have a uniform makes it worse. I'm yet to see any in a clean uniform in this Lagos.

But we know who the ones in Lagos work for.

What's the alternative? Get rid of NURTW? Do you know what those boys were doing before NURTW came into existence and matured under Asiwaju? They were robbing people on the streets and their homes. The early 90s up to early 2000s is clear evidence of this! Now the dues they are collecting is well within their charter, if you are a member and operate a public vehicle you must pay the dues, the only problem here is that Nigerians are very stubborn. When rules are established and there is no enforcement, it is hard to get people to pay; this is why it is taken by force. The dues collected are used to fund events, buy equipments and so on. If the government should ban NURTW today, I can guarantee those boys will head back to the streets looking for blood. In a sane country, if the government performed very well, there would be no need for such hooliganic tactics by NURTW, people would not feel mandated to join a union that is so aggressive.

They are working for TinuBULLION. You can never see all this nonsense organization in sane countries. NURTW is the reason why passengers pay more for transportation, thereby impoverishing the masses more by reducing their purchasing power. And the government never see anything wrong with their activities simply because they are using them to rig election.

In a little while, we will see an agbero contesting for governorship.

Nigerian constitution allows freedom of association

They are one of the largest job producer of our Nigerian economy, as their activities affects all other critical sector of the real non - oil sector of the economy.

How they levy themselves of tax and local government hackney permit (money that makes up part of IGR that funds budget that pays "suite and tie " workers) is really nobody's business so long private citizens are not disturbed for money .

Most of these people calling them "AGBEROS, THUGS" don't even have a private car or atleast a job that can get them to ride uber. Should this same agberos strike, some of them got no option than to trek long distance .

When INEC partners with them for logistics everyone keeps mute but when they visit politicians and government official hypocrites shout

No.

This constant defence of the indefensible will not fly.

The dues collected are used to "fund events, buy equipments and so on". grin grin grin Which events and equipment? Which of NURTW's audited accounts gave you this information?? grin

Quit with the threats that NURTW members will go back to robbing and looting if their so called union is proscribed today. Nigeria is hard for almost everybody! If union members go back to robbing and wilding (which they are still doing anyway) and they are unfortunate enough to be caught they will be shot. That is the reality.

At least you acknowledge the role of that big time Lagos politician undecided in foisting the plague that is the new NURTW upon us all. Call a spade a spade - the NURTW is nothing more than a private army (of ne'er do wells) used for sinister private interests. Don't make them out to be victims of societal neglect. They are a virus and like all viruses they will soon run their course and will be expelled.

Always remember that Nigeria is hard for almost everybody!! Nobody owes NURTW members a living. Or do you?

Are you a member of the NURTW? If not, keep quiet! If yes, then kindly read your charter. They all agreed to the terms and conditions contained in the charter or do you think everyone in the union is uneducated? They have some of the best lawyers and accountants, forget about the touts that are being shown as the face of NURTW, the leadership and upper chambers compiles of well educated men and women. Like I said earlier, in a sane country there would be no need for such aggressive tactics or unions but government has failed hence people form unions to protect themselves. Even in the USA where some unions still exists, if you don't pay your dues, you lose certain protections and rights. The problem is not the union, it is the way they are enforcing compliance, if you think the rate of robberies in Lagos is higher now or as high as the 90s then my friend you've been living under a rock....lol

You are obviously trolling and doing a very poor job of it. But I'll humour you for a while.

Its quite a stretch to term legitimate criticism (of NURTW members anti-social behaviour) as "dehumanizing or rediculing" their occupation. How do you perform the mental gymnastics necessary to do this?! undecided

No one has criticized anyone's occupation or the concept/idea of a workers union here. The reasons for people's ire towards these NURTW folk have been clearly stated in this thread and do not need to be repeated.

You know exactly what you are doing in defending this NURTW nonsense. What is not clear is your reason for doing so.

The only sensible post, how about crime and neighborhood disturbance, if those guys are not allowed to do their things crime will increase in large quantities. Also they're very good informants to the law enforcement agencies plus many benefits of their own, so far they don't disturb private citizens, leave them do their things government should just be putting them on check from time to time. When someone like MC makes a pronouncement, those guys at once takes to it and respect it even than government making a law. We must just learn to live with them, they're part of our society

I would suggest you keep quiet and do a little reading yourself, sir - you clearly do not understand what the word 'tout' means. I do not even know where to begin untying your first sentence up there. Anyone reading it would think the NURTW actually serves the interests of those it claims to represent instead of the abomination it is in reality. What protections and rights does the union offer and is there a provision for opting out of these so called protections and rights? undecided Is membership of the union voluntary or compulsory? I will attach a link to a thread on this NL with details of the insanity of transport unions in Nigeria - the very transport unions you are celebrating.

And what is it with this comparison of crime rates now versus the 90s? undecided What does that even mean? Kindly cease and desist with these subtle and not so subtle threats of a spike in violent crime if your beloved union is brought to heel. If it will be brought under control, it will be brought under control. And the heavens will not fall.

if your activity is at the detriment of the economy its Government business, this people do not pay income tax, they are law in them selves, if you think it's because you have a car and you don't patronise them it's none of your concern you are very wrong, they collect money from vehicles that bring in food stuffs in the city, they are solely responsible for 30% of inflation on any goods you buy so you are affected they do more damage to the economy than you think, and the top players are not productive in the economy in terms of service or good production.

if a union violate the law and the tenets of a land its the duty of the government to regulate them, what op has raised concerned us all, there is freedom of association, no union should stop anyone trying to be a transporter if he or she does not join their association, but this people do, not only that they collect dues from petty traders too, they are not unions but menace to the society.
