Pound Falls As Lawmakers Challenge May’s Brexit Deal Before Crucial Vote by BrandSpurNG: 1:20pm On Mar 19, 2019
The pound fell towards $1.32 on Monday as Prime Minister Theresa May tried to salvage her Brexit deal by winning over doubtful lawmakers with threats and promises to avoid any move to oust her.

May is expected to hold a third vote on her Brexit deal on Tuesday or Wednesday, after it was heavily defeated twice in rebellions by Eurosceptic Conservative lawmakers and by members of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist party.

If it is approved, she will ask the European Union for a short extension to the March 29 exit date to get everything in place for Brexit. If it doesn’t pass, there is already talk of a fourth vote, though May could have to ask for a longer extension.

She suffered a further setback on Monday when Boris Johnson, the pro-Brexit former foreign secretary, refused to back her agreement unless she secured changes to the Irish backstop — designed to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland.

Another Brexit-supporting British lawmaker said a “lot of people” in parliament still remained opposed to May’s European Union withdrawal deal. Analysts, however, said the pound could enjoy gains this week.

“Should May hold another vote tomorrow that would constitute a signal that she considers it possible that her deal will be accepted,” said Ulrich Leuchtmann, a currency strategist at Commerzbank.

“It should no doubt have a moderately positive effect on the British currency,” he added.

Sterling traders are bracing for further volatility as May tries to convince lawmakers to back her deal so that she can attend a European Summit on Thursday and offer leaders something in return for more time.

The Bank of England is expected to leave its interest rate outlook unchanged at a policy meeting on Thursday due to the deep uncertainty over Brexit.

Money markets currently price in around a 40 percent chance of a rate rise in December.

The pound was down 0.4 percent at $1.3245. It was also weaker against the euro, down half a percent at 85.62 pence. Last week the currency swung wildly, trading between $1.2945 and $1.3380.

It has struggled to hold onto last week’s gains as traders contemplate the array of Brexit possibilities that have opened up including a second referendum or general election.

Options markets show implied sterling volatility — a gauge of expected swings in a currency — still elevated, with one-week vols near multi-month highs. Sterling vol is higher than G10 as well as many emerging currency peers.

“With sterling one-week implied volatility suggesting the currency is coiled like a spring, there is a path for a substantial upside break-out – were a benign path of Brexit events to unfold,” said Chris Turner, head of foreign exchange strategy at ING in London.

Why make this a gender issue ? You people make me sick. So if any person questions the policies of a female leader, that makes them sexist?

You can only achieve that by manufacturing and exporting and doing without imported goods.
...goods like, pant, phone, toothpick, card reader machines, Dangote trucks, Chinese Trains.
Just look around. You're surrounded by imported goods.
If you need them, manufacture them. THEN, N1 = £1

They are eyeing trade relations with the US, middle East, Asia coutries as well as china which will be disloyalty and rebel move if they stay put in the EU hence the reason for Brexit but they forgot spreading thier tentacles would one day come back to hunt them territorialy, especially when they making rash decisions for Brexit and forgetting you have smaller countries whom are still under you isnt supporting your economic idealogy and thier border remains open which ofcourse your country can be accessible anytime regardless of the Brexit deal.

No they can't. David Cameron announced that the brexit referendum was going to be once and for all. They've had the first referendum, the people have spoken and they have to accept the result of a democratic election. The remain campaign thought they were going to win but on losing they suddenly realised that brexiters were "uneducated," "uninformed," "misinformed," "lied to" etc. and therefore, according to them, the election results should no be cancelled and their should be a second referendum. Some even said that the election shouldn't have taken place, why didn't they say that before the election. It seems the left loves democracy until they don't get the result they want.

The E.U literally has chains on them, they gain nothing by remaining in the E.U.

The immigration crisis is one of the major reasons for brexit

EU rules require the UK to admit all EU citizens who wants to move to Britain, whether or not they have good job prospects or English skills.
"Leave" advocates argue that the UK should be focused on admitting immigrants who will bring valuable skills to the country and integrate well into British culture.
