The university of Calabar Cross River state, held her annual matriculation today Wednesday 20th March 2019. The event was the 41st of it's kind.
Prior to the official celebration, the old students (Malabites), are known for observing a traditional cleansing and washing on the freshers in order for them to be pure and worthy to be accepted into the Republic of Malabor (boys hostel).
The acts of washing and cleansing starts from 5am when the old students would march all the freshers to the quadrangle (open square) and make them lie flat on the ground.
This is usually followed by stoning them with sand and dirty water (washing process). The clean water that is later poured on them is the cleansing process.
From all observations, the tradition is sometimes taken beyond cool level as many freshers tend to sustain injuries when they are being stoned.
All the same, it is worthwhile and fun filled when you think of the fact that you'll do same to others the next session.
