The Debate On Polity Versus Psyche Restructuring by torphix: 6:14pm On Mar 25, 2019
In recent times, geopolitical discourse and debates on the Nigerian political structure have dominated the media and assumed intense dimension with polarizing perspectives. The opponents of restructuring argue that, the mentality of Nigerians and not the configuration of the federation needs restructuring. Hence, the concept of “psyche restructuring” as opposed to geopolitical restructuring characterized by devolution of powers to the federating or component units, fiscal federalism especially in matters of revenue mobilization and resource ownership and control, removal of immunity clause from the constitution, decentralization of the police (state police) and making the centre less attractive for opportunistic political jostlers.

The proponents of “psyche restructuring” affirm that Nigerians’ mentality and not the federal structure is what requires restructuring. Considering the weight of the North in Nigeria’s geopolitical configuration, it is held with skepticism that such is one of the northern intrigues or well-orchestrated strategy to torpedo the revolutionary vanguard of restructuring Nigeria. In the first place, whose psyche needs restructuring? And what is meant by “psyche restructuring?
