Maltese special forces have seized a tanker that was hijacked by migrants 'in an act of piracy' in the Mediterranean after the captain stopped to rescue them.

Armed forces handed control of the vessel back to the captain who sailed it towards Malta's Grand Port, in the capital Valletta, along with the migrants and crew.

When the boat arrived this morning, the migrants were escorted off under armed guard before being handed over to waiting police officers.

Several police vans and a bus were waiting in the harbour for the migrants, four of whom were taken away in handcuffs. The captain and his crew were also seen being escorted off the ship.

Police officers were waiting in the harbour to handcuff the migrants and lead them away as soon as the boat reached dry land.

Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini had earlier said the ship, an 846-ton tanker named El Hiblu 1, had been bound for Libya after picking up the migrants but had been taken over and turned towards Europe.

El Hiblu 1 is registered in the Republic of Palau, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.

The ship was on its way to Tripoli, the capital of Lybia, from Turkey, on Tuesday but six nautical miles from port it diverted, heading north to rescue some migrants off the coast of Libya.

Officers said an investigation has been launched, but it is unclear whether the migrants will now be prosecuted for the hijacking or sent to a detention centre while they apply for asylum.
