From my observation just as a bystander the "viral" part of it started around 2 years ago

Locally it has always been the case that prominent hips turn heads, but in mainstream western (global) fashion culture, a slender figure was preferred until quite recently. Which is why people in this mbgn (who are aiming for a westernised beauty ideal) are following a western trend
