Is The US Embassy Exploiting Nigerian Students? by fisher45: 6:57pm On Mar 28, 2019 |
I just got my second denial while applying for a student F-1 visa. I was served with the Form 214b and was told that I am not legally eligible to enter the USA in spite of the fact that I got a valid admission with a scholarship and I have enough funds till my proposed return date. I would not be applying again, at least for now. I would like to suggest that if prospective students would constantly be denied without any specified reason other than an intuition that they might not return, schools in the USA should be advised not to grant admission to students from Nigeria. I was not even asked to justify if I would return or not before I was handed the form like the other students I met at the Abuja embassy. It is important for specifics to be given so as to ascertain the exact reason for the denial, otherwise the process might leave an impression of exploitation of prospective students. This is not to undermine the process or the VOs but being told that one is not legally eligible when all the requirements are met makes one feel inadequate like some kind of criminal or fugitive. The Form 214b even clearly states that the process cannot be appealed. It somehow feels unfair especially considering the rigors of commuting to and from Abuja, hotel bills and the emotional investment after receiving admission and a merit based scholarship. I am proudly Nigerian and I am not inadequate or legally ineligible. God bless the reader. Fisher Nwanne 9 Likes 1 Share |

Just give up and try to make the best of this country. Yes i know the IN thing is to run, but if these Westerners too ran, their countries wouldn't be as great as they are today. Germany & Japan were already World Leaders before World War II. They were decimated, but they never gave up. They worked as one and they are currently world powers now. People will say "they have a system that works" But the system wasn't given to them by God, they worked for it. These denials would continue to increase. That's for sure. PS - i wanted to go for a Masters at Johns Hopkins. Got a reject and i was like, "there are better ways to spend $63,000" The Masters i got at OAU cost me like $1400 in total (500k naira for the Executive program) 7 Likes 2 Shares |

jesmond3945: I wasn't asked anything pertaining ties. I only got the chance to explain why I had previous short travels, my intended institution which is renowned in Illinois, and how I intend to cover my expenses. The consular nodded in agreement all the while until she served me my second rejection... Not one prospective student I met there got the white letter. 3 Likes |

fisher45:you see these people check your docs even before you come for interview. It is always good to "over" submit docs to prove beyond reasonable doubt. The Nigerians in US are the cause of these problems. They overstay their visas thats why it is becoming difficult. Also did you appear formal when you went for the interview? How were you able to answer the questions? Have you written exams like Gmat and toefl with high scores? 3 Likes |

Nigerian students are in this position partly because of the people who have gone before them (non-students mostly). You could explore south-east asia like Korea(KAIST), Singapore(NUS), Hong Kong(HKUST). Most of these schools have generous scholarships. 1 Like |

jesmond3945: There is no provision to submit documents when applying for US visa. You can only fill the DS-160 form where you can summarize your details, credentials and whatnot. They really do not care to validate by asking for original documents during the interview except they find a reason to do so. Hence they tend to act as mind readers. As for my appearance, I was formally dressed and I also had a very high TOEFL score, coupled with a remarkable first degree grade, which prompted and availed me the scholarship. |
