The importance of education in any society whether formal or informal cannot be overemphasized. This explains why the top and serious nations of the world spend hugely towards developing their human resources. The late sage Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo is still a reference point for how he and his Action Group and later Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) were able to drive education programmes and policies in the then western region under the free education paradigm.

Indeed in “Path to Nigerian Greatness” (1981), Awolowo was of the opinion that no child should walk more than 5 km to access a school which explains why free education became a cardinal programme of UPN.
