Some residents of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, have started defacing billboards bearing the photographs Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala in the metropolis.

The billboards, located in strategic places, are being used by the governor to publicise his administration's achievements and to seek the electorates' votes for second term in office.

But some people had other plans as they started painting the face of the governor on the billboards with black paints.

Our correspondent gathered that the operation was always carried out under the cover of nights.

Mostly hit by the angry reactions were billboards erected on the stretch of road from the state headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Mokola to the state secretariat housing the House of Assembly Complex and the Governor's Office in Agodi.

More pronounced were the smaller billboards attached to the poles of the street lights erected on the road.

There were mixed reactions from residents when our correspondent sought their opinions on the development on Tuesday.

While some respondents described the development as a clear signal to the governor that he no longer enjoyed the goodwill of his people, others attributed it to politics of bitterness and hatred.

Those who hold the former view argued that no sane person would deface the billboards of a governor who was well loved and accepted by his people. They said the defacement was a sign that 2011 elections could not be an easy ride for the governor.

But those who hold the latter view said, rather than defacing Alao-Akala's billboards, those who were not pleased with his style of governance should decide the governor's fate with their votes.

In his reaction, the governor's Special Adviser on Public Communications, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, attributed the development to the opposition.

He said, The defacement of Akala's posters in some areas in Ibadan is symptomatic of the delusion that once the posters are distressed, the opposition will score an advantage.

Nothing can be further from the truth because unlike the ink that smears the posters, the electoral worth of Akala is indelible in the minds of Oyo State voters.

For now it's more that smell of his bleach. He doesn't have any respect for Ibadan and Oyo Obas. Indigines are very angry with this stupid gov.

Please don't be so sure of this. He does not even stand a sure chance of getting the PDP ticket. All good people of Nigeria should if possible work against the emergence of that man as an elected official in any capacity in future elections. He is a disgrace to the state.

I am aware of the funny politics they play in Nigeria but I think the tide is turning against Akala.

Within PDP, he is at logger heads with the likes of Ladoja, Lekan Balogun, Adeojo, etc; the people with him are the spent forces of Akinjide and Kolapo Isola. I even doubt if the broken house of Adedibu is with him. The opposition is also getting ready for him as Ajimobi, whom people believed actually won the gubernatorial election, has joined AC. There are also other opposition elements like Adewusi, Soji Akanbi, etc. I just hope the opposition elements will get their acts right this time around as the people of Oyo state are not really for PDP (especially in a free and fair election)

On other fronts, important people within the state have been giving him cold shoulders and Akala has been at war with them. He is presently embroiled in fights with the Alaafin and the Olubadan (two of the state's frontline's monarchs) as well as Lam Adesina (this is not unexpected though). Just last week, a scathing criticism of Akala was delivered from unexpected quarters by a person no less than Arisekola Alao.

Again, if comments from within and outside the state are anything to go by, I do hope that the days of Akala are numbered. Please note that at the last election, Ajimobi trounced Akala in the major towns of Ibadan and Oyo but the rigging machine poured in his 'winning votes' from Ogbomoso - the same formular that was used in Osun and Ondo states.

Let's watch and see what happens.

What party is Ajimobi from?

Who are the leading contenders from within the PDP apart from ladoja?

AC/Labour etc should be taking advantage but they are just a one way party

Senator Abiola Ajimobi is a member of Action Congress Of Nigeria(ACN).

Senator Teslim Folarin(Senate Leader) is a major contender in the PDP.
